How do you control Rasplex?

I know, it’s a stupid question. Do you guys just use a keyboard/mouse with your PI’s? Is there a more user-friendly communication method I could add for computer-shunning family/friend (while watching movies, that is)? A simple remote of some kind?

Does your display support HDMI-CEC?
If so you can use your TV remote to control it

A Flirc dongle so I can use my Harmony remote, or the Plex app on phone/tablet to fling content.

One of my home TV’s supports HDMI-CEC. But my plan for this was to make a “mobile home theater” that I could take along on trips to be used in hotel rooms (by myself or my tech-savvy wife), or at relatives/friends houses (elderly relatives are the “computer-shunning” folks I was referring to who might use this setup). So I was looking for a more generic control. I’ll check out that Flirc thing and the PLEX app. An app on a smartphone would be fine for me/wife, but not the elderly relatives - they need simple “standard remote control” style buttons. Realistically, I’ll probably be present even if relatives are using this, so my concerns are probably more theoretical than practical. Still, I like to research different options so I know what’s available - for my own learning, if nothing else. Thanks for the help!

Then as suggested, a Flirc with a remote that you take a long with the
“Mobile Home Theater” would be the easiest to use in multiple places

Thanks for the answers, hthighway and WilhelmStroker!

Personally I prefer to use small wireless USB keyboards. Not the bluetooth kind, but those with non-bluetooth USB dongles for the wireless connection. Such keyboards exist in many conveniently used shapes, some similar in size to a console gamepad (only flatter), and others in a shape similar to normal TV remotes. My favorite model has simple navigation and air-mouse buttons on one side and a full ascii keyboard on the other, while still being slimmer and lighter in weight than the average TV remote.

Have a look at the RemotePi board from MSL Digital, it is supported by Rasplex ‘out of the box’.
