+1 from me. Really think this would be a great feature.
Come on ! We’re at least 10 users on my server, and I’d love to be able to make public playlists.
One way to solve the issue with including media from a restricted library could be that the specific media is accessible to everyone with access to the playlist only from within the playlist itself.
Tried to share the playlist myself, only to discover this and similar topics. Since than I found a workaround that worked for me: Collections
- “Playlist” will be tied to the library
- Any user with access to the library will have access to the Collections within the library
- Existing playlists cannot be easily converted to the collections, selecting movies within playlist does not seem to give an option to edit tags of the selected files
- Only the user with edit permissions for the library is able to create / edit collections
- Using collections in this way may interfere with their primary purpose, to group related movies together.
To create the Collection which would be visible by other users can be done as follows:
- Select one or more of the files you wish to add to the collection
- Click the edit pencil icon
- Choose “Tags” tab and scroll down to the Collections field
- Add or delete the collection(s) to which the file(s) should belong
While collections are designed to group things like trilogies together, there does not seem to be a limit to the number of movies which are part of one, or number of collections which can include the same movie.
425 comments requesting this since 2014 AND you guys still haven’t done it yet?! at least we know you listen to your subscribers…
make. shareable. playlists.
Thanks!
Hello Plex Developers, so most of us are stuck at home for this COVID19 Pandemic. I have family sharing my server, I would like to lift up their spirits my sharing my music playlist with them. Any chance someone can work on sharing Playlists? I noticed this thread is long. If I was a programmer I would do it myself. I would even pay $50 for the feature…please, can anyone help!
calm down and read the latest blog post:
https://www.plex.tv/blog/okay-so-here-we-are/
We were able to … provide early access to a new feature we’re working on, single item sharing, so teachers can now share their playlists or specific content directly with their classes.
Is that enough of a silver lining for you ![]()
Okay, so I’m a teacher (though currently not employed). Can I access this new feature, or must I wait till it’s publicly available? And BTW, though I do have a lifetime Plex Pass, I understand that that monetization model doesn’t help a lot with future growth, and considering how much I use Plex, I’d be happy to change to a reasonable yearly subscription. IF you implement shared playlists, of course
I guess you’ll have to wait… but I cannot tell for sure
You can gift a Plex Pass to a friend if you feel an imminent urge to give some additional money to Plex (once the feature is publicly available of course).
This is the most encouraging news on this feature in the 6 years I’ve been following this real need.
It’s been a gaping hole in this service that I can’t wait to be finally closed.
Thank you!

This would be an awesome feature to have. I just spent 30 minutes putting together many different playlist that I thought would spread to my home users but clearly was wrong. I hope this feature gets added soon and believe it will. Love Plex and support everything they’ve have done. Some of y’all should really be less cruel.
You’re all aware that it is possible to share playlists with friends right now using WebTools, right? This topic is about it being implemented in Plex natively?
I have a playlist of every piece of tv and film in the MCU, arranged in ideal viewing order, that I’ve shared with a dozen friends. Same with my respective playlists for everything Stargate, Trek, and Doctor Who (2005).
So far nobody has complained that the order shifts at all during transfer. My only complaint is that you have to do each share one at a time, per user per playlist.

I’ve just pushed updated code to https://github.com/bifa2/PSPlex if you want to give it a try.
I’ve been developing using PowerShell 7 on Windows 10, but you should (in theory) be able to use PowerShell 7 on any OS. There may be some issues re: credential storage but we can sort that out if need be.
For me a lot of show are out of order (sometimes due to how meta data is pulled) or span across tv shows and movies so I make playlist that have them in chronological order, for example the clone wars or how to train your dragon.
Would also love a feature that allows me to share specific playlist with specific users or globally to all users. All types of playlist, both movie, tv and music. With options to make it read only or editable.
With all of the requests for this feature, it is amazing that it is not yet implemented. I have worked for many software companies and when thousands of customers over the years ask for a feature upgrade… they tend to listen.
Why doesn’t plex listen to their customers request for simple features added? I mean really, how hard is it? Mirror the feature for sharing a library.

Also better Collection support and Collections in the sidebar. (Different thread, I know, but let’s go).
Apologies if this has already been answered before but asking it anyway. I managed to get WebTools working. If I was to make a change to a playlist i.e. add something, remove something or move something around would that change filter to the other users or would I have to copy it again?
@dane22 can probably answer best. However… I suppose it’s safe to say the playlist will not automatically be transferred/udpated.
