Record Live TV after it has already started?

I’m sure this topic has been discussed/answered, however I can’t find it.

Let’s say I’ve been watching a live TV channel, and I have to leave but want to record the rest of it so that I can finish watching it later that day. Is this possible… on Roku?

I have tried doing this, opening up the FF/RW/etc menu, clicking the record button, but nothing seem to happen.

I just tested on my Roku Premiere and was able to start a recording in progress of a show I was watching. While viewing the show, I pressed down on the remote to bring up the play controls and then pressed left three times to select the record button. Pressing that brought up the recording options menu with “Record This Episode” highlighted. Selecting that started the recording.

The Plex app on my Roku is 6.4.8. What’s yours?

OK, I do get that stuff too, however I never see a ‘recording’ in Plex anywhere. I have done a DVR recording before, for example recording a football game, but I set that to record well in advance of when I was supposed to record, and it showed up in my normal ‘TV Shows’ library.

So getting specific, good idea:
Device: Roku Streaming Stick+
Plex App: 6.4 build 8
Roku App: 9.2.0 build 4750

I poked around a bit in the Live TV DVR stuff (on the web app), and I did actually find what I would call the ‘Recording Requests’, however it seems like it never actually recorded them (screenshot attached).

Ok, that’s good. It does appear to at least be starting the recording. Just to be clear though, the program won’t show in your “TV Shows” library until the airing is over and any post-processing has completed (e.g. commercial removal). If you decide you want to continue watching it while it is still on, you need to go back to the guide and select it from there. While the recording is ongoing, you can check its progress under Live TV & DVR -> DVR Schedule.

If the airing completes and the program doesn’t show up in your TV library after 3-5 minutes, then perhaps you have a problem.

Hmm OK, if you notice that one was from November 28th, so that airing should be over… I can’t recall specifically which options I selected, but I presume it should have recorded only that airing (and not recording every airing), so it should have completed on November 28th (the Today show runs 2-3 hours).

Does the ‘Cancel Recording’ imply that it’s still recording? Nothing in my Dashboard indicates that.

I did another one of these yesterday (12/4), basically the same thing. I included a larger screenshot of the 12/4 attempt showing the ‘DVR Schedule’ stuff in the background.

Sorry, I didn’t notice the date in the other image. I just started a test recording which will complete in ~25 minutes. I’ll ensure it works as expected.

Hmm… I just confirmed that this worked as expected in my environment. I started watching show live and then manually started a recording from within the Roku Plex app. After it completed I checked on my server and it was indeed added to my library.

You may want to test if pre-arranged recordings are still working on your system to ensure nothing’s happened to the server’s ability to write to the library’s folder. You did not mention your server’s host OS; if it’s Linux there could be permissions issues with the “plex” user’s access to the drive where the library’s media is stored (there could be for other OSs as well, but it’s more common on Linux).

It may also be beneficial to gather some logs showing the issue:

And to answer your earlier question, no, the presence of a “Cancel Recording” button on that dialog doesn’t imply that the recording is still in progress.

Well… this now seems resolved… I’m not exactly sure what happened. BTW, I confirmed the permissions within my storage (on Linux) were fine.

I tried recording something, and when I went to view the program being recorded, it said there was something wrong with my tuner (I have screenshot if desired). I went and verified my tuner in the DVR Live TV settings, everything looked good there, and I hadn’t had any issues tuning in and viewing Live TV. I went back to the DVR Schedule and the program was now recording.

I tried recording a few others, including in the middle of a show, and it seems to be working as expected.

So I’m going to say this was an issue on my end, seemingly with my tuner, especially considering that no other users seem to be reporting this issue. It is strange that it wasn’t working, and I’m not sure what I did to kick it in gear, but things seem better now.

Not sure if my logs might tell a tale, not sure if anybody would care to look at them to see what might have happened (to potentially prevent it in the future), but I have them if desired.

Thanks for the help!

No problem, glad you figured it out.
