The problem exists on Android TV Plex app and a WD MyCloud PR4100 running Plex Server.
The video files themselves play fine in any PC or Android video player like VLC or the stock ones, it’s like Plex itself doesn’t respect the EXIF data orientation information in the Android TV app. The Plex web interface plays the video files in the correct orientation. On the Sony Bravia 4k 2015 with Plex, it shows the thumbnail in the correct orientation, but the video plays rotated.
There are so many instances of this issue being reported in the forums, but this thread actually has a Plex employee commenting. Hopeful this gets resolved after all these years!
I am also having this issue. Videos play correctly on all devices even PLEX on my old samsung 2016 TV, but not on the firestick, there many videos are upsidedown.
This is a huge bug that makes playback for photo/video albums impossible.
Please fix this ASAP.
EDIT: Forcing a much lower bitrate to make PLEX transcode the videos is a temp workaround, but suboptimal as then the videos look poor. Please help.
Also experiencing this on Fire TV stick. Forcing transcoding resolves it - but cannot direct play. Landscape videos are upside down, and portrait videos are rotated but in the portrait dimensions, so rotated and squashed.
Been using Plex on a dedicated windows 10 server /player hooked directly to my TV for years without a single issue but when I recently bought a new Sony Android TV I got this very problem with a lot of the home video clips I have. As previously mentioned, the thumbs are correct but videos are either upside down or flipped 90 degrees. No fix in sight?
We need file that we can reproduce it with. If they are from a phone camera. take video of something generic like a landscape or something if you don’t want to share personal videos. The others that were shared in this topic played fine for me.
Same here, using mi box s, and the video flip as well. View is ok on other devices. Might be issue with android tv. I’m using latest version of android tv
Same issue here, no resolution that I can see. Using iphone with Plex media player for Android TV and videos shot upside down or sideways on iphone show upside down or sideways on Plex media player for Android TV.
This is not an issue on Plex for Apple TV as somehow the metadata appears to be being read correctly and those videos are automatically oriented in the correct orientation (from original photographer’s viewpoint, not whether it was really upside down or sideways according to the iphone).
so this issue unfortunately is going to require a whole rewrite/update of the player that is used for photo libraries. it does not used the same player as tv/movie libraries, It was player just for photos then when the server updated to allow videos in a photo library i imagine that is when y’all started seeing it break. An updated player that can handle photos and video is being worked on but is likely not something that will be soon.
I don’t know all the technical implementation details - but would a quick fix not be feasible - to detect rotated videos (its in the metadata) and force a transcode for those if its for the broken player (if I play in anything except original quality then it plays with the correct orientation).
The photo libraries use a completely different player than video libraries. and afaik the plan is to completely rewrite it. I will bring it up but I don’t know if it is possible
Has this issue been resolved? I tried to play some home videos when I was at my inlaws this weekend, and some were playing upside down, and some shot in portrait mode would not even play back. Also on the Fire 4K.
Please suggest the fix here - the videos are in the photo library.
Do I now need to run all my Pixel3a videos from my phone through AviDemux to remove the rotation tags?
What is the time frame for Plex to fix this?
Added: I have tried it at home, on my MiBox3 (running Plex client v7.28.0.15501) and I don’t have this issue. Both videos that had issues on the 4k stick (playing upside down, not playing portrait mode) don’t have issues on the MiBox3.
So either this is a problem with the Fire stick 4K Plex clients, or it’s a problem with playing stuff remotely. I don’t believe it’s the latter, so I would like to know what version on the Fire 4k stick does NOT have this issue so I can sideload. This is hugely annoying.
