How to add a fully custom personal "TV show" without online metadata?

Let’s say my kids take their camcorder out and record multiple episodes of a “season” of their own “tv show”.

I want to add this tv show to Plex. I don’t want to add the series to any online metadata database like TVDB. (Or: assume that the online database would delete this personal show.)

For extra challenge, assume that my custom personal tv show has the same name as a show that is in the online databases.

How can I add a fully custom TV show with my own metadata? Titles, episode descriptions, thumbnail pics, theme songs, etc.

That will never be overwritten by any remote source?

Is there any guide for this?

Plex DocsYour Media → Personal Media → Naming Home Series Media

Organize as home series in an Other Videos library.

Use an MP4 container to add personal metadata.

Plex will pick up embedded metadata from mp4 files. Not sure exactly which fields are supported, never seen a specific list. Season & episode numbers & episode names should be picked up. Not sure about actor list, etc.

If your regular TV library is set to Prefer Local Metadata then it will do as mentioned above and use the local embedded metadata. If you manually edit fields then make sure that the lock icon next to field is orange which means it is locked

Also you can make a TV library but use the use the old Personal Media Show agent which will never get online metadata. ( be aware this is a legacy agent and may be replaced at some point)

Thank you for the links.

Do any of these methods allow for all of the metadata to be defined in something like a single “manifest file” rather than in the video containers?

A single JSON (etc.) metadata file for the series or season would allow the data to be more easily backed up and/or shared.

sorry they do not
