I’m trying to make TV mini-series look “sensible” and I came across the comment below (by @tom80H), but it did not include any explanation. So far, the only way I’ve found to do this would be to create an ENTIRE LIBRARY for the single show and set the library to hide seasons. Please tell me that Plex is more capable than that!
My libraries are configured to hide seasons for single season series, but that isn’t working as expected – it still shows “Season 1” in the listing of shows in the library when I expect that to be hidden. I noticed an option to use season titles when available…perhaps it would be helpful if we were allowed to enter our own names for the seasons (as we can for the shows)? Then we could manually name the season “Mini-series” to make it clear there is a difference between season 1 of a new show and a mini-series.
@tom80H thanks. I was selecting the Edit->Advanced from the poster displayed for the show, but it seems that wasn’t the show – it was just a season and there are very few advanced options for a single season (I couldn’t even hide it [smile]). When I found my way to “the whole series” I found the setting.
However, it does NOT hide the season where I actually wanted it hidden. When viewing the list of shows, it would be better for a mini-series to NOT show “Season 1” and that is what I thought I would be hiding.
Then I noticed the library option to “Use season titles” and started to wonder why I cannot enter my own season titles. If I could, then I could use “Mini-series” instead of “Season 1” when appropriate.
And now I’m more confused…
When I enabled the “Hide for single season” setting for one TV library, it appears to have been set for ALL of my libraries.
When I enabled the “Use season titles” option, the text in the library listing for the MINI-SERIES changed from “Season 1” to “2 Episodes” BUT a new series (with 6 episodes in the first and only season so far) is still showing “Season 1” – How is THAT configured?
When I disabled the “Use season titles” option, the mini-series is still shown with “2 episodes”.
Now that I look closer, it appears that most (but not all) of the single season shows in all my libraries are now showing the number of episodes, The exceptions are showing “Season 1” in the “Newly added TV” list, but “# episodes” in the library itself, which is even more confusing.
But, should I put a feature request in to allow us to manually name seasons, or should I consider moving one of my (what is it, three?) precious votes to the existing request?
You can. This will already be the case when you let Plex automatically set season titles.
This shouldn’t be the case if you’re using the Plex TV Series agent. However… legacy agents only have server-wide settings, so it’ll apply to all tv show libraries using that legacy agent.
If you configure a show to hide seasons, Plex will display the number of episodes instead the number of seasons as subtitle under the poster.
The recently added hubs will show what’s actually been added… if you’re adding a single series (even if it’s the only season of a show), Plex will list the added season in that hub.
I think the confusion here is when you are looking at the “Recently Added In [LIBRARY NAME]” line on your library’s “Recommended” tab. Unfortunately (this is an annoyance I have with Plex) this section will literally always show the number of seasons of a show that was added if you added more than 1 episode in a day.
Even for single season shows, technically you added one season of it, so it displays that you added a new season. And clicking this item entry takes you to the SEASON view of the show, instead of the SHOW level, which does not display the trailer and show plot.
The only way to see the effect of “Hide single seasons” is:
When you view the list of all TV Shows, single-season shows will list the number of episodes.
When in the SHOW level, it will display all the normal show items such as trailer and plot, but also then lists all episodes below this instead of the individual season buttons.
Another confusion I see here is you asking about “Season titles”. This bit of info is only used in the SHOW level. When enabled (and after you refresh the show’s metadata), Seasons in the SHOW level will display a name instead of “Season XX” if there is a name for it. Not all shows have a name, but you can manually add one if you want by clicking the pencil edit icon for the season itself. For example, Avatar has season names:
None of these settings will fix the “Recently Added” hub labels though. I think Plex lists “1 Season” here because it will not assume that the single season you added is the only one. So it prepares this entry for your users to let them know that you added an entire new season (in case you add a season in a long-running show).
