How to configure correctly and in the best way my library with Plex Home and Managed Users

Hi, actually I’ve various libraries organized as follows:

  1. Movies for parents
  2. Movies for Family
  3. Movies for sons (typically cartoons, animation)
  4. the same (three libraries) for TV Series

Now that I’ve a Plex Pass LifeTime I would like to begin using the Plex Home feature with Managed Users, which is the best approach I should use ?

In family we’re in four: me, my wife, my first son (10 years old) and the little (5 years old).

I would like to create three users:

  1. me (shared with my wife) as the master
  2. the oldest son (10 years old)
  3. the youngest son (5 years old)

I’ve read the documentation about Plex Home and I’ve found that I can set up a more granularity permission over the single item (movie, tv series, ecc.) using the label, correct ?

I’m thinking to use the content rating field so I can define a particular series of values to be used, something like:

  • T = everyone can see this item
  • 10 = only 10 years old
  • 5 = only 5 years old

Am I understaing well ?

Please, help me, I’ve quite a large collection of items so I need to start in correct way.

Thanks, regards, and Happy Plex!!!

Roberto.

That’s correct.
You can either keep those individual libraries and give each user access to the full library (or not). Alternatively you can manage all your content for movies / tv shows in a single library (respectively) and manage visibility per user based on e.g. age restrictions and labels (by either including or excluding certain labels).

You can also change this as they grow older and e.g. at some point give access to more content (e.g. by adding movies rated PG-13 at some point). To play it safe, I’d start with actively assigning content to them by labels.

Also you can create a test user with the same settings to see yourself what content each of them will see before giving them access to the content itself. I recommend to play around with the feature a little and get familiar with it.

Thank you tom80H, I’ll begin to play with this feature.

Ok, I’ve created some managed users and chosen some libraries (not all), it works pretty well.

Now, I would like to start managing the content, if I click Restrictions tab of a managed user (look at the attachment) I see a list of values, as you can see I’ve chosen “Unrated” as with this setting in my library for this managed user I can see only 2 movies that has the “Unrated” value in that field.

But how it works exactly ? I would like to setup some values based on the age for my movies so I can after select the appropriate values for my sons.

Other question: the values that I see are all the PMS find in my movies ? I think so but I want to be sure.

As you can see in the attachment on the right on Film is written “Permetti riscontri dei film con voti o filtri inferiori”, translating in English should seem something like “Allow movies with values or below filters”, how does it mean ?

Thanks, regards.

Hi, just to let you know that everything is ok right now, that translation isn’t perfect (in Italian), looking the English version I understood its meaning.

Thank you very much for your support!!!

Unfortunately this is incorrect. You cannot exclude any label from a managed users view, only include. There is no restrict list, only an allow. You would have to add a label to all the other titles in your library for the sole purpose of excluding one title. For a large library this is very annoying. This should have been one of the easiest, day one fixes to the current home setup options

Hello all,

I did the same for my kids, only allowing movies etc. with a specific custom made label, but their library remains empty even after adding the label to albums/movies.
What could be the issue?

Did you enable the new Collections feature?
Disable it again until a fixed server version has been released.

Thank you for your answer.
I’ve been playing around a bit more and it seemed that I was adding the labels in the wrong sections.
Seems they need to be added in the album properties “Sharing” tab and not per-song.

I don’t think it is even possible to add sharing labels per-song.
