How to manage tags for a large library of home movies

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2645

I’m a new user to Plex and there remains a handful of topics that I don’t yet fully understand how to manage. One of those topics is tag management, by which I mean the folksonomy of values that can be specified on the “Tags” tab of the modal video “Edit” dialog. this dialog contains entry fields such as “Directors”, “Country”, “Genres”, “Writers”, and “Collections”.

Here is what is happening: I’m attempting to import hundreds of family videos. Adding them to the library was easy and they are in, what I believe to be, a suitable directory format. However, even with properly formatted filenames, there are a bunch of attributes that I’d like to add. For instance, a “Writer” could be the family members in the video, and “Collections” could be a topic, such as a vacation label of some sort. The difficulty I’m having is getting all of the tags entered, dealing with my evolving sense of an appropriate folksonomy for the tags, and being confident that I’ve not overlooked videos or mislabeled them. Does anyone know of a way to do any of the following?

  • Rename a tag for all videos using that tag: This could include a fix for spelling, capitalization, or topic.

  • Filter or identify movies that do not have attributes set for a given field. So for instance, list all movies in a given folder that do not have “Writers” identified.

  • Under one of the Library views, add fields to the record for a given video. So for instance, in the List view, add a column for Writer of Collections.

I know that in the List view I can select multiple records to add common tags to those movies, but with the large number and sometimes ambiguous and similar file names, it’s difficult to identify what records to select. If you can help me answer any of the above, I think that it will help to significantly reduce the time that this project is requiring. So thank you in advance for taking the time to consider my questions.

Thanks and Best Regards,
John
