How to manually change a TV show's episode order

I have a DVD rip of the TV Series Firefly in Plex. Firefly had a pilot that Fox elected not to air until later so in order of appearance on TV it was eleventh. The Plex agents have are in order of airing and have it as eleven. But on THE DVD and in terms of chronology it should properly be episode 1. This causes most of the episodes to be out of sync.
With movie agents I can fix an incorrect association but with the TV agents I can only change the association to the entire show and not the individual episodes. I like all the posters, descriptions, and such, what do I have to do in order to get this look but with the proper episodes associated with the proper files? Can someone point me to some instructions on how to do this?

Paging @JuiceWSA

Maybe I can help get you started until @JuiceWSA comes along with the finer details…

You will need to install the DVDOrderAgent here:

Read and follow the installation instructions for the agent

Maybe not necessary. but you should probably get rid of the incorrect info Plex has stored for Firefly with the Plex Dance:

  • Move the files out of view from Plex
  • update the library
  • empty trash
  • clean bundles

Now rename the files and folders properly in the DVD order. Sounds like you have that already… but just in case, some examples:
Firefly
… \ Season 01
… \ … Firefly - S01E01 - Serenity.mkv
… \ … Firefly - S01E02 - The Train Job.mkv

Unfortunately, the TVDB seems to be down for the moment. (again) When it’s back up these links will help get the right order for file naming and matching…
Firefly (http://thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=78874&seasonid=15791&lid=7)
Scroll to the bottom, and select DVD Order (or directly, http://thetvdb.com/index.php?lid=7&seasonid=15791&seriesid=78874&tab=season&order=dvd )

Put the new files back into your library, and let Plex mis-match the order again. Then, select “Fix Incorrect Match” and choose your newly installed DVDOrderAgent to match them. They should show up in the right order now. If the TVDB is back up. It’s still out of commission at the moment…

So it installs as an agent? That would be cool. I’ll have to try that after work.

@cory_jackson - yes, it’s an alternate agent that you only need to use for shows like Firefly. You don’t need to set up a special library using that agent, the default TVDB agent is all I ever use. Just use fix incorrect match at the show level in Plex Web, and choose the DVD Order Agent to match.

Make sure the TVDB ((http://thetvdb.com/) is up and running before you try (it’s still down) because you won’t get any matches at all, even the incorrect order

Paging (wow - had to delete that - it freaked out the post window)

I turned off that paging system a while ago - either that or it isn’t working (probably the former).

@leelynds is entirely capable of dealing with this issue and has done so adequately.

Yes, I remember reading through a thread dealing with Firefly naming, that both you and @leelynds were involved in.

@leelynds raised the alarm. I smelled the smoke and helped carry buckets of water to pour on the blaze.

For anyone still searching this, Plex now has a built in solution so there is no need to go through the separate agent download.

Here’s the updated solution copied from a Reddit thread:

  1. Edit the show.
  2. Go to “Advanced” and change the episode ordering to “DVD order” and “Save Changes”.
  3. Refresh the TV Show.

@Perham.Scott Thanks mate. I was trying to figure out what to do with the best Sifi show known to man/woman (Firefly). Thanks for the tutorial :slightly_smiling_face:
