Fixed it… everything.
It was the IP settings on the Drobo, they were all wrong!
For some reason, after I updated the software on the Drobo three days ago, it was not getting the correct numbers from the DHCP. So I manually entered the IP address, the DNS and the gateway, and once restarted, everything worked. It signed in, stopped telling me that it was out of date and even downloaded some cover art for films that I had added yesterday.
It is also, now visible outside my home network (which is the only reason I was trying to update the software in the first place).
To think, I was blaming Plex when it was a dodgy Drobo update that was causing the problems all along.

Deleting DroboApps/.servicerc worked for me. Thank you!
YES!! This finally did it for me. It finally showed up as at least an option to update, which I did NOT do. I let it run its course and… low and behold! It FINALLY updated. Thank you!!
As a matter of fact, I can’t get the update to work. I’m on Plex Server 1.0.0.2261, tried deleting .servicerc rebooted, but the plex.tgz still remains in /DroboApps and nothing happens. The newest would be Version 1.0.2.2413 as it indicates in plex.tv. Any further suggestions?
1.) Copy plex.tgz file to /DroboApps directory. No need to delete any files or folders at this point.
2.) Go into Drobo Dashboard and start a reset
3.) While drive window is open in Explorer Window (or other OS file navigator), repeatedly delete the .servicerc file until drive reset has occurred and drive is no longer accessible.
4.) Dobo5N will restart and will install plex.tgz file.

Anyone find out why the DroboApps version lags so far behind what Plex offers?
Well think I just figured out the answer to my question… I downloaded and installed the latest Drobo version from plex.tv/downloads (version: 1.2.7.2987-1bef33a released on: November 8, 2016) and now none of my videos are able to stream to either by Chrome browser, Android device, or Samsung SmartTV.
I have a Drobo 5N and experienced very similar frustration to your guys. Be very very certain that safari (if using a MAC) isn’t converting your file to a Tar file. You need to make sure the extension is .tgz
Step 1. Change Safari preferences:
Safari > Preferences > untick open safe field after downloading.
Step 2. Re-download the plex file (ensure that once its downloaded the extension is .tgz and not tar).
Then go and download the file from http://plex.tv/downloads/
Step 3. Stop the plex Server
Step 4. Copy the file to the DroboApps folder
Step 5. Reboot.
Step 6. If the update has worked it is very likely that the .tgz file willl disappear from the DroboApps folder.
Step 7. Go and re-start the plex service from Drobo Dashboard.
Step 8. Then Click on configure. This will take you to the plex server web page… Click on settings, then click on server. You will see under your login details the current version.
The install works fine, browsing the media collection also works fine for me. What didn’t work was actually streaming content Plex would continually complain about server not powerful enough. Happened on web browser to my Mac, my SmartTV, and mobile devices. And before anyone asks I did have DirectStream turned on.
I have the Drobo 5N and have the latest firmware (not at home so can’t check ATM, but I know I updated it relatively recently).
The available via DroboApps version direct streams just fine to my devices (even remotely given good enough internet connections), but latest from Plex.tv/downloads does not and reports what I mentioned earlier.
Having given up on PLEX over a year ago because I had so many problems and no time to deal with them, I spent the last 3 hours trying to read and try everything I could without any luck until I followed gmihailo’s instructions.
I had so much hope since I had gotten to the last page of this post. Especially since the .tgz file had disappeared. So I couldn’t believe that I still showed the same server version that I started with. So I closed and restarted Plex. And it showed the new version. FINALLY.
I’ll never know if the 4 other downloads I made today might have worked since I never tried Step 9.
Thank you all for all the suggestions and finally getting this up and running. Now I’m off to see if it works on my other iOS devices remotely.
Been trying to get the latest update manually updated for 2 days. I’ve tried deleting .servicerc and rebooted the Drobo at least 20 times but no matter what I do it will not update. Anyone have any other suggestions?
So… Adding my voice, as of mars 2017. Have updated Plex without any problems for a long time. Now i am on PMS Version 1.3.4.3285 and a new version has been available for a while. But Plex won’t upgrade the trusted way (as described in this excellent thread). Has anyone else noticed this? Is it a result of the latest firmware and updates of drobo dashboard? Or is this host me having a isolated problem.
So to answer my own question. After several attempts to update by placing the plex.tgz file in DroboApps folder, restarting etc. (as explained above in the thread). I installed bash. logged in to my Drobo and ran the DroboApps.sh install command. (DroboApps.sh install Plex) It seems you must run the command as root. (sudo su). A restart later and the latest version of Plex is installed. Nice…
How do you do this? I have installed Bash but have no idea how to log in to the Drobo via SSH and run the command scripts from there. Getting very frustrated with the non user friendy-less of this unit.
Update:Got the lastest version installed by going directly to Plex’s page and downloading the latest Server version for Drobo. Dropped that .tgz in the apps folder as opposed to the update and restarted and it worked.
So, I just got an 2nd hand Drobo Pro B800fs.
I manually installed the Plex server app and it made the install folder after a reboot. All is fine.
Now I’m trying to connect to this server to do the setup, but my Dashboard will not show “Drobo Apps” and the Client installed on my laptop can’t find the server. Any ideas how I can connect to the Plex server to tell it where to find movies and so on?
My Plex Version 1.4.3.3433 have this message on Parms / Server : An update is available. Install manually.
I click on the link to download it and like the procedure above, put the .tgz in droboapps, reboot the NAS… but after multiples reboot, etc. Its not working.
I read the What’up button and saw the version is 1.4.4.3495.
I decide to download it directly from from http://plex.tv/downloads/ and I realize it is not the same version on website, the version is 1.5.0.3501. (web is version 3.1.1)
I start again the update and all seems OK now !
My home domain prompts me to authenticate on the “home” domain. If I type “.\admin” it just switches to “Domain: Local Computer” I cannot get it to authenticate. Do I need to type something like, “Drobo5N2\admin” ? Why can’t I authenticate? I know the correct user/PW because I can login to Dashboard fine. Also, it should be mentioned that I have Windows default Security Policy. Does it need to be edited? I’m so fustrated!
