I did look in the Synolgy package manager for an “update” - didn’t think it would be “install” though.
The crazy thing is that the package manager says the newest online version is 1.21.0-3744. That is earlier the the Plex UI says is installed! Assuming Symantic versioning with an extra build id or some such.
So should I ignore the update notification or install the older version?
Ignore the update notification for now. Wait on 1.30.2 (date tbd) to see if the major problems with 1.30.0/.1 are fixed.
You can subscribe to the Plex Media Server Release Announcement thread to be notified when new releases are available. Scroll to the bottom of the thread and change Normal to Watching.
General Comment #1: Let someone else be the guinea pig. Unless there is a compelling reason to do so, never immediately update to a new PMS release, especially the beta (Plex Pass) releases (you probably do not have beta access since you do not have a Plex Pass).
Most public releases are stable, but every so often something slips through the cracks. A perfect example is the TrueHD transcoding problem with 1.30. It was not in 1.29.2 and was not noticed during the beta release period.
General Comment #2: Keep the old Synology installation files, at lease one or two versions back. That way if you get bit by an unknown bug, you can fall back to the prior release. Plex does not publish older releases on their web site. For example, once 1.30.0 was released, 1.29.2 was removed from the download page.
Yes, it is confusing.
1.21.0-3744 is the version available via Synology. It should never be used. Falling back to 1.21.0-3744 will break your Plex installation.
3744 was a beta release issued when DSM 7 was in beta. It is no longer compatible with current Plex Media Server releases or current versions of DSM 7.
Unfortunately, Synology will not remove it from their system and will not update it to a more current release.
Ooh now I confused as surely installing via Synology package manager as you say I should do (eventually) will install that dodgy old beta version it lists as latest? It appears in the beta section only!
Or does “manual install” install a different version to that it shows as latest? If so that is appalling UX!
