How to Optimize movies for Multiple Mobile devices

Here’s my problem statement.

I have 3 or 4 tablets/mobile phones that my family uses when traveling. We like to load up a lot of movies (But not my whole library) and bring them with us so they are local to the tablet. The “Downloads” (the replacement for sync) feature works great for this. (I use Custom Android 1.5 Mbps, 480). We can watch movies while on airplane mode. Perfect!

However I seem to burn a HUGE amount of time that each tablet is requesting the file to be optimized, and then downloading it. It doesn’t keep the optimized version. The next tablet has to ask for the file to be RE-optimized, and then download it. Add to this, we might not use the tablets for a few months for travel, so Android removes the permissions from Plex which screws things up, and I usually have to resync it.

I’d like to:

  1. Optimize my entire library so that…
  2. When a tablet selects download, it just downloads the optimized version.
  3. Bonus points for automatically optimizing new movies as I add them.

I tried doing this with a playlists and/or collections, but It didn’t really work out the way I expected, and when I deleted the playlist, all the optimized videos got deleted.

So what’s the best way to approach this? Is it really just optimize the whole library? I was a little nervous on kicking this off since it will probably take a week or two to do this, and didn’t want to burn the time on another failed attempt.
