I’m completely okay watching ads, but the religious ads playing every break have got to go (I’m looking at you, GCU). How do I get ads tailored to me? I’ve been using Plex for a few years and it still plays the same religious ads over and over. I don’t look at this stuff online, so why are the ads so cr*ppy?
The conventional wisdom is that the people selling ads will apply discretion and not allow ads that disturb their viewers (aggressive political or social ads; medical scams; predatory loans and phony investments; etc.) because when your viewers are disturbed they stop watching, and also because it’s the right thing to do. Unfortunately in some settings it ends up difficult to do both because advertising sales has become increasingly automated (without humans screening ads) and also at some point someone with an MBA makes the point that turning down money means you make less money than if you accept money. Hopefully Plex will do right by you.
Do you watch streaming tv channels, or more on-demand movies and tv shows?
Can you name a channel or movie where you’ve encountered these ads?
Can you remember the time and date?
Literally, the first 8 episodes of Weeds (on demand). I quit watching in the middle of the 8th episode. Those GCU ads have got to go. Check out episode 6. It was the first ad shown after the Plex splash screen.
I agree that certain ads of a political nature, are overwhelming and are skewed to a particular audience. I have been inundated by Kamala Harris ads with a zero balance of any Trump ads. Is this for the direct purpose of Plex and their affiliates to influence votes for the upcoming election? Regardless of who i would choose to vote for, I take exception to anyone pressuring me to go with their opinion without it being an educated decision with all information avaliable. I’m sure im not alone in being frustrated over this.
Bottom line … I will not be streaming Plex, and all of the shows I like, at least until after the elections are over. I will reevaluate my decision then.
Interestingly, I haven’t seen any political ads (which is fine). There has to be a better way to serve ads and not alienate your users at the same time. I like Plex’s layout, but the ads are also making me stream elsewhere.
In general, it’s the person paying for the ad that decides who sees it. They pick the demographics that they want the ad played to, and the ad network serves the ad based on their choices.
Yes, I know how ads work.
