Any way to pick the commercials I’m forced to suffer through? I subscribe to a service to avoid advertisers. If that can’t be avoided, I sure as heck don’t want political ads! Get rid of them, puh-lease? As a last resort, I’ll just cancel, regrettably.
Plex’s official position, expressed by many staff members, in many threads, is that they do not care whether they show offensive, obnoxious, inappropriate, or incorrectly targeted ads because they use an ad auction system and have no plans to moderate or intervene. If you don’t believe me, you can see these threads:
I don’t speak Spanish, but am bombarded by Spanish language ads ←- Here you can see a Plex employee locking a thread when I said exactly what I just said because they were mad at me about it.
Separately, their position about Plex Pass is that the money you pay for Plex Pass has nothing to do – and will never have anything to do – with the free content, which is ad supported. So they have zero interest in allowing you to pay to make ads go away. (This might seem confusing, and I agree – Plex’s core business offering is deeply confusing.)
Here you can see multiple threads that are about the exact issue and show that users are widely confused:
I can’t imagine any of this helps since of course the answer I’m giving you is “the people you’re paying money to have no interest in fixing the problems you have with their product”, but I think if you investigate you’ll find it’s true. Sorry!
Plex is just rehosting services from some streaming provider. They have said they do not have control over ad content. All the targeting that is deciding to show you those ads happens outside of Plex’s control.
You aren’t actually subscribing though, right? Isn’t Plex’s streaming content exclusively ad-supported?
Don’t use the worthless free content. Just pretend Plex is only what it started out to be. Ignore/disable the rest.
