How to speed up offline sync

Hi,

I’d doing some offline syncs to my iPad and I’m currently getting around 6x speeds and I’m wondering what I can do to speed it up. The current setup is

i5-4460, 16Gb running on Unraid.

When its transcoding all 4 cores sit around 90% and I’m currently transcoding to a mechanical array. Is it a matter of more CPU power, transcoding to a SSD drive or something else?

The limiting factor will typically be CPU when transcoding. In your case it is the CPU. Getting a more powerful machine is one way. You could also try increasing the quality of the video Sync so instead of transcoding the audio and video it may remux (change containers from mkv to mp4 for example) the file which is much faster. The last option is to convert your files to a format that would not require any transcoding. This can be achieved by understanding what the requirements of the device you want to sync to. A quick and easy tool would be handbrake as it already has profiles for various devices.

Thanks for the reply, that’s exactly what I wanted. I don’t want to change the format as 99% of my watching is done at home but if I can speed up the syncs for those trips away that would be excellent. I’m eyeing off an i5-8400 now
