I have a Synology server, 5 bay, 8TB in each for a total of 40TB of space and have a few apps installed including Plex.
In general, I like to store things in folders so they are organized and easy to find. However, I am confused about how to save all my music on Synology under Plex?
I have been creating a folder for each artist and moving the albums into corresponding folders. But what if that artist has dozens of albums? Would I need to create a folder for each? Let’s take Eric Clapton for instance, would I create a folder called Eric Clapton and then one folder for each album and then move the files for each album into its corresponding folder? I have over 4,000 CD’s so wouldn’t this take a very long time? Could I take the Clapton folder in iTunes (or the location of the iTunes files) then move it into Synology for Plex to read it?
Finaly - is using iTunes files in m4a better than using mp3 or wav? What is the best one to use?
I haven’t used it myself, but several people have said that they use an app called Media Monkey to organize their files into the proper folder structure. You might look into that to see if it can ease the task for you.
If your embedded tags are in very good condition as outlined in Trumpy’s post, and your Plex server is fully configured to prefer embedded tags, the folder structure isn’t as important as it used to be. But if your tags aren’t in good order, the file/folder structure is essential. So between tagging and organizing files — which one is less work?
@Trumpy81 - Thank you for your response. I am not sure I understand this fully. What do you mean to use certain tags? Doesn’t iTunes music (and hence the associated files) already have tags built into them? In other words, shouldn’t this be as simple as dragging a folder containing an album into the file structure on Synology so Plex can then read it?
Also - is using iTunes files OK or should I convert all files to mp3 or WAV?
Agree mp3tag is a fantastic tool and completely free for PC/Windows.
On macOS its now out of beta, costing approx. US$15 after the 7 day trial expires.
