How to tag a song as a single?

I have a lot of singer/songwriter songs from local artists, but when I buy these tracks online and try to add them to Plex each one shows up as a single song “Unknown Album” instead of as a single. (These songs aren’t part of any released album.)

I tried to use mp3tag to add the RELEASETYPE of single; (and different variations of these) with no success. I just want to see all the songs listed as singles under the artist, not as unknown albums. How can I do this?

Particularly with material which is not on record over on musicbrainz.org, you better take great care of how you name, tag, and organize your files into subfolders.

Using the releasetype tag is a good start, but you also must supply some of the other basic meta tags.
In particular the Albumartist and Albumtitle tags.
In general, treat a single release just as you would treat a regular album release. The only difference is that you would use the track’s title as the “Albumtitle”.
Give it its own subfolder, just as you should with any regular album: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200265296-adding-music-media-from-folders/

If you add the releasetype tag after the fact, (then Refresh Metadata on the release!), you might have to reload the web app for the change to be picked up.

That is the best I can come up with also, but it still lists every song as a standalone album this way; none of them are listed as singles.

Please show the embedded meta tags of those songs, as well as their folder organization.

Like so, for instance:

Loose singles that do not have metadata online is not an area where Plex shines unfortunately.

What I do is group them by theme or genre and make new fake albums with titles like “Shoegaze Singles” and Album Artist set to “Various Artists.”
