As a Lifetime Plex Pass user, I must say that it’s an absolute shame that the ability to nest a custom filter search STILL has not been implemented. This was requested in early 2017 and the Plex Employee (chris) said “What you are asking for is “Nested Rules” which is something that is on our radar and we would like to support. / No ETA on when that unfortunately.” Coming up on 3 years later and such a basic filtering technique is still not available. Given how tagging and data organization is such a strength of Plex, one would think filtering down at a more granular level would also be a basic feature. This seems like it would be incredibly easy to implement, yet nothing for over 2 years now.
I’m also a lifetime plex pass member and the lack of ability to use booleans (AND / OR / NOT) in custom filters has been a long time issue. A custom filter without being able to use multiple terms is practically useless. Too often albums are multiple genre or you want a certain genre or artist. It appears this has been requested for YEARS and has not been added. Can we please get this added quickly? Where do you report bugs and feature requests so that we can see Plex staff response and track items to completion or follow up if they are not getting done?
I’d just like to bump this subject because I’ve struck the same (major) limitation and there doesn’t seem to have been any progress on this for years. It doesn’t seem to be possible to do something like have a playlist that includes songs that are either from a range of moods or belong to a range of genres.
Would it be possible to allow a smart playlist to be a combination of other playlists, i.e. the item is either in this playlist or that one etc? That would overcome the problem.
BTW - I tried to search the feature suggestions to vote on this request but couldn’t find anything. Is there a search facility specifically for feature suggestions?
Apologies if I’m missing the obvious, but is there a search facility specifically for the Feature Suggestion forum? I don’t want to add a suggestion if it already exists (I’d vote for the existing one) but there seems to be hundreds of requests and a manual search doesn’t appear feasible.
When you are in the Feature Suggestion forum (or any forum) and you click the Search tool, there’s a checkbox that let’s you choose whether to limit the search to that forum.
Alternatively, you can uncheck that box, and an ‘options’ link will appear. You can click that and get a more advanced search tool.
This might be helpful for some. I was running into the same issues described above and was able to work around it in two ways. This is regarding using the OR function for two separate filter types.
I’m using the Plexamp iPhone app to do it since it seems you can setup proper OR filters by changing the filtering style from MATCH ALL to MATCH ANY when your filtering tracks in the app. So I have one rule that is Track Rating is higher than 1 star, and another rule that is Track Rating is Unrated using the MATCH ANY (aka OR) style.
To add another layer to it all, I used album collection tags to get around the “exclude this playlist” function. So for example I’ve created a new album collection tag called “Exclude from Shuffle”. I’m using that tag for specific albums like music scores from games and movies, or Christmas albums. Since Plexamp allows you to do rule groups as well I have two groups setup.
This way I can create my custom Shuffle All playlist that filters like this: (Album Collection is not “Exclude from Shuffle” AND Track Rating is Unrated) OR (Album Collection is not “Exclude from Shuffle” AND Track Rating is Higher Than 1 Star)
Whats nice about this is that once you have the filters set and smart playlist saved in the Plexamp app, the smart playlist can still be used in other Plex players. It just seems you can’t edit the playlist’s filter rules outside of Plexamp.
