[HowTo]: splitting multi-episode files with MKVtoolnix GUI

I am using the open source tool Handbrake in a docker to split / merge / transcode / remux files, especially recorded episodes including remux from .ts to .mkv.

Handy to use, also free of any cost and runs awesome in a docker on my NAS (incl Intel QS hw acceleration).

You can’t use Handbrake to remux, or split, or merge. (at least not without re-compressing the source file, which causes further degradation of the quality.)

Retaining the quality of the source files is the whole point of this thread.

I am trying to split a mkv into 2 separate files, bit the second file starts with a few frames of the ending of the previous episode. How can i find the exact time when the first episode ends?
Im on a mac, and i am using vlc for the time codes but cant see the milliseconds to find the exact moment when the first episode ends.

The above method will only split on “key” frames. Which means you will never achieve ms-accurate cuts.
For that, you would have to use a cutter software which re-encodes the video stream. But that is a) bad for the quality and b) takes longer.

What tool do you use to split those giant files into separate episodes if you are running a MacBook Pro?

Thanks, I’ll see if the OS X versions are solid versions and not betas. The author said he is not big at all on Mac stuff and doesn’t offer any support beyond putting the downloads up there. Thanks SE56!

I couldn’t fathom having to watch my 60 episodes of Ben Casey off DVD’s.

Very helpful guide. Thank you for posting, and for the Plex forum for hosting this kind of content. This sort of info is why forums are important. This guide would have no longevity if it was buried in some random Discord server, or YouTube video, or Telegram channel.
