It has a 1.5 Ghz processor with 2600 Passmarks. CPU performance should be comparable to other J-series processors
Software transcoding, if PMS runs on it, will be comparable to other J-series processors.
Hardware transcoding is unknown. We have not tested on this NAS. If it runs QTS 4.3.6 as the other NAS systems do, it should be compatible.
I have asked QNAP for information but not yet received it.
Hey @ChuckPa, the HS-453DX uses the 4C J4105 processor which supports HDMI 2.0 (Gemini Lake - UHD Graphics 600) and runs QTS 4.4.x (LTS Kernel 4.14).
I’ve already reached out to QNAP for an advance copy of QTS 4.4 for my test systems here.
While I have no doubts about the processor, I must make certain PMS is ready to run on it.
This is why I need QTS 4.4. QTS 4.4 is a major change. I need to make certain I’m ready for it when it releases to the public.
Sorry my question of newbie but what is PMS and is it better to install the QTS 4.4 version on Qnap?
The HS-435DX is only available with QTS 4.4 installed.
PMS has only ever been verified with QTS 4.3.6.
QNAP has been making significant changes with each of their updates recently (4.2 - 4.3, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, 4.3.3, 4,3,4).
Some of these changes required changes in PMS’ installer to to properly support the new version.
I only want to test 4.4 on the unit, making any necessary changes, before 4.4 goes public beta next month.
I am annoyed and I would like to have your opinion to make a better choice.
I really like the Qnap HS-453DX
it has a built-in 10G network card.
HDMI 2.0 - 60 HZ
two M.2 2280 SATA SSD slots
another model that I like is the TVS-473e.
CPU
AMD R-Series RX-421BD Quad-Core 2.1 GHz Processor (Turbo Core to 3.4 GHz)
Maximum Memory
64 GB (4 x 16 GB)
10 Gigabit Ethernet Port
Optional via a PCIe adapter
HDMI Output
2, HDMI 1.4b (up to 3840 x 2160 @ 30Hz)
Here is my real need: I want to watch via hdmi port 4k content of the best quality possible. Possibility to have 5 people streaming via different media. Local PS4 lan and wifi tablet. and apple tv
It’s a buy for a few years and I’m trying to make the best choice….
here is the comparative : https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/compare?products=tvs-473e,hs-453dx&ref=product_overview
I’m sorry? “Annoyed” ?
AMD RX-421BD (2015) has 1/2 the performance of i7-3740qm (2012), without QSV vidieo support.
AMD RX-421BD has 1.5x the CPU performance of a J3455 CPU, without QSV video support.

HS-435DX has not been evaluated. Its potential acceptance in the NAS Compatibility Guide is pending.
QTS 4.4 has not been evaluated.
My Opinion
“Annoyed” = not sure … sorry for my bad English… i speak french
I will follow for advice.
I should buy my NAS next fall. Do you believe that this leaves enough time for product evaluation and QTS 4.4 has been tested.
thank @ChuckPa
I am also interested in this model’s ability to transcode 4K video.
