Htpc wont play live channels but website and firetv does

Server Version#: current windows 10
Player Version#: current httc windows
Tuner Make/Model: xteve
Guide/Lineup name: directv
Using XMLTV?: yes
Channel number/Name: all using httc app on windows 10

error recording failed. please check your tuner

i got rid of plex media player and tested the plex httc app on my windows 10 machine that also serves plex media server.

i use xteve to bring in the channels and xml guide and match them up. then forward to plex media server. things work much smoother that way.

like i said i can play live channels threw the local website and a firetvcube.

i turned off firewall, and deleted the plex media server folder except database. and still same issues.

also i have 5 tuners available from my iptv provider

i found the newer version of plex player also dont play live tv channels. although certain channels will play if you lower quality real low. the strange things are the following.

the player is on same pc that plex server is installed.
the chrome plex server webview works fine at highest quality on the server pc, or other pcs in the house.
the firetv that is wireless and far end of the house plays all live tv without lowering quality, even raising the quality to the highest.

im assuming its some sort of codec flaw in the windows based apps.

also i removed plex server and reinstalled and only configured the live tv. and same results. so i can assume its not working for anyone.

It doesn’t appear to be a general issue.

Of course, my setup is different from yours.
I am using a real tuner, and my player is running on a different machine from the server.

Thanks, but my web browser works too.and my firetv app works too. And Android app works too.

The Plex apps for windows doesn’t.

I have tested both Plex for Windows and Plex HTPC.

that’s strange. what do you think it could be? i really like the apps except for that and the photo timeline. is there some place i can look in the logs to find what’s happening?

i can also record 5 shows at a time, threw the website. so the streams shouldn’t be an issue.

i found a ongoing issue with this at topic

i cant understand why plex would make such a big deal out of there htpc over the plex media player. when the only real benefit is the live tv, for windows users.

the main reason i need this to work is cause the website dont work with htpc remote. i have to use mouse to channel surf. and that’s not saying much for a media center software. ive used media center software for over 2 decades and plex is the best besides windows media center which is retired. emby does some things better than plex, but it needs allot of polish and more streamlined.

i remember setting up macros on my pc to change the channels, with windows media center 2004. and since they retired it, ive been in a never ending search for a media center that does at least what it could do, lol

so excuse me if i get a little frustrated with the progress. especially since im a retired techy myself. just a little frustrated they polished plex media player and have the same functionally .

well at least it works threw a web browser.

and if you are serious about it actually working, maybe do a YouTube video showing it work. or better yet read my logs and diagnose it. but making it sound like im lying is a bit insulting. and not providing and technical help.

i could erase my pc, reinstall windows 10, then install only plex media server. with only live tv configured. then install plex htpc.

do you want proof afterwards, if it fails? i can do Facebook messenger

im sorry i just realized your not a plex employee with any say, im just frustrated.

I am having the same issue, although my Live TV channels were working fine with the latest update until just yesterday when I started getting the “Could not tune your channel, please check your tuner or antenna” message. My Plex is running through my cloud PR2100 and for the tuner I have the HD Homerun Connect Duo. When using the same HD Homerun Connect Duo tuner through the HD Homerun app the live tv channels work fine so I know is not my tuner or antenna.

@pty50: Would you be able to post debug level server logs covering a period of time where the Live TV error happened?

@hokierulz

Plex Media Server Logs_2022-06-26_16-15-14.zip (3.5 MB)

i just reinstalled plex htpc. and tested channels again, still no luck. heres the logs, hope they help.

@ pty50

im glad it worked at one time for you. at least that gives me hope. for now i found a emulator for android on my htpc computer and put the plex app on it. it works fine.

amazon firetv-works
android-works
apple-works
127.0.0.1:32400-works
plex media player-not aplicable
plex htpc- nothing

mayby i can find and older version of plex htpc online somewhere.

The error I’m seeing is that your Plex Media Server transcoder process is dying. In many cases when I see this it is associated with some type of environment issue, but the specific error is one I haven’t seen before. It possibly looks like a programmatic error where it posts “Error writing trailer of chunk-%05d: Invalid argument”. (More extensive log extract below.)

I’m assuming your HTPC client PC is on the same LAN network as your Plex server? In HTPC, under settings, do you have all of the following set as:

  • Local Quality = “Original”

  • Allow Direct Play checked

  • Allow Direct Stream checked

  • Try it with “Use Hardware Decoding” both checked and unchecked to see if it makes any difference.

@hokierulz

– some pc specs if it helps–
AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Eight-Core Processor 3.70 GHz
ram 16.0 GB
samsung ssd evo 970 plus M2 drive 500gig
nividia geforce gtx 1060 6gb
and i just updated the nvidia drivers to latest just now

since your trying to help, if you can figure it out i will tip you 120.00 the cost of the lifetime membership

  • Local Quality = “Original” - yes
  • Allow Direct Play checked - yes
  • Allow Direct Stream checked - yes
  • “Use Hardware Decoding” - tried both yes

they are on same pc, and all the other devices are on the same lan, and work fine with live tv.

also i tried installing plex htpc on my laptop which is even better performance. and it did the same thing. the strange thing is it works all ways except threw the htpc app.

I can’t replicate with my HDHR Extend even though I’m reading that xteve is supposed to emulate an HDHR. I’ve tried with my Extend transcoding to h.264 and left in original encoding of MPEG-2. Of course with OTA in the USA I’m getting a .ts container.

I found something that could cause this. Are you running MalwareBytes? According to this article using MalwareBytes can result in exactly the error you are getting in your logs. If so, the article provides details on how to resolve by excluding the Plex executables in MB.

If not Malwarebytes, then if you use another antivirus I’d suggest turning it off just long enough to test if it is causing the problem. Of course turn it back on when the test is done.

@hokierulz i use Malwarebytes firewall , which just controls windows firewall, and use windows defender. i did get the same thing when i ran without firewall and defender. no other security. i have teamviewer if you want to check it out and give temp password.

This isn’t exclusive to Windows. I run my PMS on OSX and the exact same behavior is present. I have seen both with my HDHR and xteve

Using Plexweb (mostly in Chrome) channels play fine
Using Mac Plex desktop player, channels don’t play
Experimented with HTPC, channels don’t play

Another oddity is with xteve I get no guide logos at all in plexweb, but I do in Plex desktop. I’d prefer that streams actually play lol.

@5stringdeath

you have to get a xml that don’t provide logo links. because xteve uses the logo links from guide before the m3u playlist. i can help with that, i had same problem, now i have all custom logos. and only get guide for channels i need. only channels i want.

That’s fine, I rarely watch LiveTV in Plex and I prefer the xml logos for my other main client (TiviMate)
