Always been skeptical of Huawei App store. I have a Huawei phone though and occasionally check it out. This is the first time I have been genuinely confused/concerned about the apps on their app store. I’m seeing and update to version 8.6.0.20410 for the Plex android app. Did some Google searching and couldn’t find anything. What’s up here?
This is correct. Plex recently made a deal with Huawei to include the Android app in their Appstore since they are not officially allowed to include Google Play on their devices anymore.
Okay well that’s good. I’m curious why the version number is different from that on the Play store though.
You mean the build number 20410? This was a special build made for them. It’s done outside of the automatic build process for the Google/Amazon builds so the number doesn’t match, but it’s functionally the same.
I mean, I’m inclined to believe it’s a version and not a build number. I say this because I would be shocked if they released their app with a build number this transparently. Normally build numbers are internal and not directly released as a version. This means that you’ll end up switching between builds from various app stores depending on who gets their “build” first. I’m not saying you’re wrong but if true and they release directly based on a build and not a release version number it exposes an entirely new issue as seen here in that some people will end up in a ping pong between app stores. I have yet to see this issue with any other app.
That is the build number. The same is done for betas, Android (mobile) beta release notes. There is also an internal build number that is used by the store for upgrade purposes.
The first 3 numbers are the version, in this case 8.6.0. Version numbers for public releases should be the same. The build number is just done for tracking purposes by the devs.
Yes, it is possible that if you are jumping back and forth between different appstores, you could run into a conflict with the internal build numbers so you may not be able to upgrade from 1 to the other, but there really isn’t a reason a user should be doing this.
It’s not up to the user. Both app stores exist by default on Huawei devices and if auto update is enabled it’s out of the users control.
That seems odd. Only the store that the app is installed from should be able to autoupdate.
