I can not use my ANDROID and OS devices without internet on PLEX media server

Hello

I have a PLEX Pass account and I want to use my Android and iOS devices on Plex Media Server without internet, but it doesn’t work. How can I solve it?

Also, can I run DLNA on Plex Media Server on my Android and iOS devices ? Can I use it without internet?

Regards

You can reduce/minimize Plex‘ dependency to have an active network connection. However you won’t be able to use it well in a no-internet environment.

There’s an exhaustive post in the tips & tricks section discussing these dependencies and how to address them.

I’m not sure I understand your question about DLNA. You can activate the DLNA server of your PMS. The dependencies are the same as running DLNA still needs your server to run… and that’s where most of your dependencies are.

I find that Local PMS Music does not work, or at least is delayed. When In my car I have been using the Plex App on my Android phone. I’ve given up on Plexamp as I find the interface way too complicated to use. Plus my use case is driving, play from a list of all my songs randomized. Plexamp no longer allows a playlist with over 1000 songs. Why the limitation is beyond me!

Anyway, the Plex app on Android has all of my songs downloaded - so it’s all local. However, well first off, under Android Auto there are two “libraries” and both have the label “Music”. One has no songs and the other has all the songs. I’d love to get rid of the empty one.

When going to my playlist labeled “All Music” I can play it, but it’s not in shuffle mode and quite frankly I’m tired of hearing that same first song every time while I find and tap the Shuffle icon and Next button. Thereafter it’s doing what I want - playing all my music in a shuffled mode. But getting to that Music library and playlist seems to hang for a while while the Plex app is trying to connect to my PMS, ergo no network means it doesn’t work. Why it needs to “call home” is also beyond me. I guess it’s because it wants to update PMS to record what songs you listened to but I would think that it would only really attempt that after a song is played. And if it can’t get an internet connection and talk to the PMS I would hope it would batch up the songs played to update the PMS when and if an internet connection becomes available.

The bottom line for me is if Plex App has material locally then try to connect to the PMS in the background but meantime allow the user to play their local content. After all, that’s precisely why we downloaded that content.

Thank you all for the information

Very useful link, there is a lot of information

I meant do I also need internet to run DLNA.

Is there any special app needed on Android or iOS devices to use DLNA?

Lord, one of the rubning issues with plex. Same thibg happens when you try and play your downloaded movies and episodes with poor internet…it just hangs and hangs. This is oke of the major bugs that just goes unaddressed. Getting worse and worse. But hey, you got a new logo and the discover feature no one asked for!

This is a limitation.

At least for those who pay for the PLEX pass subscription they should develop a solution, it is not always possible to find good internet in remote places, and even worse while traveling on the roads.

For me the idea of using PLEX media server is for a local network, therefore, it should not be necessary to depend permanently on the Internet connection.

What do you mean this is a limitation? You cannot get things from a remote server if you don’t have a connection, that’s correct. That’s what downloads are for. You download your media ahead of time precisely to get to that media that you have downloaded. But that doesn’t work because it seems to foolishly be checking in with the mother ship. That part should be fixed. It should do that later and get on to the business of playing your local media.

For example, on a recent trip, I had pre-downloaded a number of movies and episodes to my tablet because I knew I’d be on planes. Played them with VLC and they worked just fine. Came up without any delays and played perfectly. And while I was at an airport with surprisingly good WiFi waiting for a connection I tried but failed, to download some more media from my PMS at home. Posted a problem here about that - I mean isn’t that one important use case? You’re waiting for a plane, luckily you have a decent internet connection so you decide to load up some more videos for the next flight but it fails miserably.

Speaking of which, next time I should try to download some videos from my PMS while on my home WiFi and next trip try playing them on the plane where there’s no way I’ll have internet (I don’t pay for internet on planes). We’ll see if I’m at all able to play those downloaded from the PMS server videos.

I apologize for not explaining myself well.

I don’t want to connect remotely to the PLEX server.

The NAS where the plex media server is installed is connected to the LAN port of a router, where I have created a WIFI access point to provide internet service to android or iOS devices , obviously only when I am at home . Also, configure the router, so that the devices, can connect to the plex media server as well. Everything works fine.

I want to implement this same system , when I go on a trip. I will install the NAS and the ROUTER in my car (connected to the 12 V battery), so that the passengers can watch movies on their phones during the trip. On the road, the coverage of the cellular companies is very intermittent, and as a consequence the internet as well. For this reason, I need the plex Server to be able to work without an Internet connection.

This application would also be useful when I am in remote areas of the city or when boating, for example.
