I cannot get Plexamp for my music and Plex for my videos to work off my local network

Hi. Please help. I have been able to access my music library for years from outside my network, even across the country. I understand that there’s a new app for music, so I downloaded Plexamp to my phone and signed in, and I can access all my music ONLY while I’m on my home network.
I had trouble with the Remote Access on the regular Plex app turning off spontaneously, so I manually specified 32400 as the access port and enabled UpNP on my router, and now I have a green check mark next to Remote Access and it says it’s Fully Accessible outside my network, but it is not. When I turn of the WiFi access on my phone, there’s no connection to the server.
I’ve attached the Plex Media Server Logs. I’m running what I believe is the latest server. It was updated today. I need to get this running ASAP as I’ll be out of town for several months and need remote access. Thanks in advance.

By the way, I used canyouseeme.org and got the following response:

Error: I could not see your service on 98.162.137.99 on port (32400)
Reason: Connection timed out

Your IP:
98.162.137.99
Port to Check:
32400

I’m not sure what to do from here. I have no idea how to assign a port or what ports are available. This is like speaking Latin. Please make it easy.

Manually assigning a port and UPnP are competing concepts.
Can you review the behavior after disabling UPnP on the router?

If the result remains the same (canyouseeme.org stating the port cannot be seen / requests timing out), there’s a chance your ISP is blocking this particular port or a range of ports. To further troubleshoot, you could try to assign a different public port to the port forward on your router (and update the PMS remote access settings accordingly).
You could e.g. test a random port between 32000 and 60000, and a common port like 80 or 8080.

If the ports are still listed as unavailable, your best shot will be to contact your ISP and ask them if they could unblock the port of your choice for you.

Another check:
Does your router list the same IP address as its WAN IP (public IP address) as recognized by canyouseeme.org (98.162.137.99, according to your last post), and is that the same that’s listed as public port in the PMS remote access settings?

Yes, the IP addresses in my router and the PMS Public port match.

I disabled UPnP…no success.
I assigned 32000…no success.

Again, this is like Latin to me. Are port numbers standardized, or can you just choose a random number and assign it? Also, how would I know which port numbers are already assigned?

Would it be worthwhile to try to assign a public port by configuring port forwarding through my router? Maybe that’s what you were saying in your response. I found some instructions in the internet to try to do that if you think that would work.

If you mean by that enabling this check box

then this is useless by itself.
It has to be used in conjunction with a “port forwarding” that you create in the settings of your router.
It is very much recommended to use a random port number on the WAN side of the router. But on the LAN side it must be 32400.
The port number on the WAN side is what you put into the field in the above screen shot.

Thanks. I’ll try to translate all of that and try port forwarding according to what you just told me.

OK, I was able, through trial and error, to create a forwarded port. I set it use TCP/UDP protocol, again through trial and error, and it seems to be working. Thank you for your help! I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

One suggestion: A lot of us are not computer wizards. Going forward, simpler instructions in the mobile apps and computer apps would be far easier to understand. Maybe aim at an audience of app lovers that are not computer technicians. But again, thank you.

Do NOT forward UDP packets. Only TCP. And only this one port.

We are talking about a “server”-type of application. That is a different thing than just surfing the web and passively consuming media. Since most routers and ISP gateways are not primarily intended for such a use, it requires more effort and knowledge to operate.

OK. I don’t know the difference, but when I tried TCP first and it seemed to work at first but then stopped. I’ll switch it back. I hope it still works.

It seems to me the people who created this platform should make this easy for its users. All I want to do is access my music library from anywhere. It has been a frustrating experience trying to get this to work. I’m happy to put in the effort to get it to work, but maybe more information prior would be better and quicker, like which protocol to be used and why.

This a month late for you, sorry, but may be of help to future people

I was having the same issue this last week, but updating my server version from 1.41.7… to 1.41.9… seems to have sorted it, and music is once again playing whether or not my phone has WiFi on or connected.

It should have been obvious to me to check that, but I tried all sort of stuff before I noticed there was an update available!
