I cannot link my account to Alexa Plex Skill using Chrome on Windows

Server Version#: 1.32.6.7557
Player Version#: Amazon Echo Dot Plex Skill?

On my Windows PC, Windows 10, using Chrome.

My Alexa “Plex Skill” on my Amazon Echo stopped working a couple days ago. I finally got around to trying to re-link it. But from the plex skill page (Amazon.com: Plex : Alexa Skills) when I click “link account” - I am signed in and everything just fine. I click “Authorize” and then get a 404 error (Sorry we couldn’t find that page). From this site:

You've received an Alexa Link

I tried this on two separate computers. I tried to log out and log back into Plex and re-authorize. I tried disabling the skill, then re-enabling, then re-authorizing. None of it works…

IMPORTANT: I WAS able to get this working using my iPhone in the Alexa app. That linked just fine.

This was more about - has anyone had issues getting the Plex Skill to authorize using Windows/Chrome?

I am having the same problem. ECHO stopped working a week or so ago and I finally (last gasp) disabled the PLEX SKILL in Alexa on my Android phone. Now I cannot re-LINK the account! It goes into an infinite loop of “Logged in successfuly” screens (that look like I’m in PLEX). I keep clicking “Sign in”; it works; and then the “Sign in” screen comes back. I have spent more than an hour on multiple phone calls with AMAZON, and they have (finally) suggested I contact PLEX and I noticed your post. A number of days ago the PLEX SKILL stopped working, and now I cannot re-LINK the account… I don’t know if the original problem is fixed or where it came from.

My solution was that I got lucky using my iPhone instead of chrome or firefox on my computer.

Maybe your solution will be to use your computer browser instead of your android device! At least it’s worth a try to use another platform.

95% of the time, if I can’t find the answer on a forum like this, or by trying things myself, I’m out of luck, tech support can’t do anything. 5% of the time, I have a problem or get a tech support person that can actually debug or fix the problem.

My account said it unlinked my account because too long had passed, so apparently there is some timeout on account linking and it has to be redone.

I’ll never know why Chrome/Firefox failed and iPhone worked. One of life’s mysteries, I’m just grateful I stumbled on a solution, because I’m convinced tech support would not have been able to resolve.

I should have said I have the same (or close) symptoms. Let me clarify. Plex workarounds aside, I can use Plex on the house LAN and even on the WAN (Plex app on the phone). What I can no longer do is use it with Alexa because I go into a “Sign in” infinite loop when I try to link the account. A number of days ago I could no longer play music via Alexa (effectively “Ask Plex…” resulted in “Uh oh, something went wrong…”). As a last resort, I disabled the skill on the phone and then ran into the (new) “Sign in” infinite loop.

I read somewhere that I could link the account using a computer, but I could not figure out a way to do that. Next time if/when I talk to AMAZON I will ask if there is a way to do that. At least then I will get a better look at what’s failing. Once (if ever) I am able to link the account, I may still have the original “Uh oh” problem. I did nothing that I know of to cause any of this. Plex under Alexa just abruptly stopped working.

I manually disabled the skill – it did not time out. And it’s never timed out before. My experience with Plex and Alexa together “over the years” is: in the beginning, it did not work well at all. Then it started working. Then stopped. Then started. Etc. For a good number of months now it has been working, and then, all of a sudden, it stopped in the last week. AMAZON basically disowns the problem, but the last I heard they will look closer at the Plex-Alexa protocol to see why it may be failing now. It appears AMAZON is not being flooded with complaints about the problem. And there may be two problems – the new “Sign in” infinite loop and perhaps something in Plex with the Plex-Alexa protocol. I don’t know. No one says what’s really going on under the hood, so I can’t figure a workaround if one even exists.

I resist reporting “bugs” in, or in general even using, this forum. I only checked it to see if anyone else experienced the problem. I don’t see a lot of chatter here or from AMAZON on this issue. And, again, I did not do anything I can recall to bring this all on. I do know I can no longer use Plex with Alexa, and see no fix(es) in sight.

P.S. I am using an OLD Plex server (on Windows 7) and an OLD Plex client (SHIELD). I “froze” these versions when I got both to work together relatively well on the LAN. Since then, Plex no longer even supports updates to the server on Windows 7 (unless that changed). Up until just recently, this setup has worked on the LAN and on the WAN (Plex app). (Actually, curiously, I have two phone lines and two Google Pixel phones. On one phone movie subtitles do not work right, even though I’m using the same current version of the app on both phones. And music does not work on either phone. I never complained in this forum about this app music problem. I’m just mentioning it in passing now. With Plex-Alexa on the LAN, I play only music, and it worked until sometime in the last week.) I have always (with workarounds) got Plex to work on the LAN. On the WAN (phone ISP), movies, but not music, basically work.

I wanted to give a follow-up. A miracle has occurred. I navigated to ‘Getting Started with Alexa Voice Control’ link in the Plex FAQ:

https://support.plex.tv/articles/115000320808-getting-started-with-alexa-voice-control/

That page contains a link labeled ‘Plex Skill for Alexa’. I took that link. It brought me to, ON MY PC, the AMAZON page for the PLEX SKILL. (I didn’t even know this was possible, but I had read it was possible.) This is ON MY PC, not ON MY PHONE where I could no longer link my Plex account to Alexa for some unknown reason. Anyway, that ‘Plex Skill for Alexa’ page has an option to link the skill FROM THE PC. And it worked! The Plex skill is linked!

To test, I executed a music-playing routine, and the original bug (“Uh oh. Something went wrong…”) seems to have gone away. The routine plays songs from a particular playlist. It played. But stopped after one (1) song. That has happened before, for some unknown reason. I restarted the routine, and it is playing the second song as I type this. After 4 or 5 songs, it stopped playing the playlist again. I restarted the routine again, and it is playing again.

As far as I can tell, the problem that has been plaguing me is fixed…for now. Thank you to whoever put that ‘Getting Started with Alexa Voice Control’ page together. I don’t know if I can re-link the account on my phone (not that I need to now; as long as the PC thing works, I’ll be happy). Interestingly, in all the calls to I made to AMAZON about this, no one there asked me to try linking the account from my PC.

Darn I should have been clearer in my post. When I said trying it from the browser, I meant trying to LINK the PLEX SKILL from the browser, because I DID know about the link on the Amazon web page to do it.

But ironically, that’s what was broken for me. I COULD NOT link my plex account to my Alexa Plex Skill using a browser on Windows (I tried three browsers, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox).

Then I got it to work with my phone.

So what didn’t work for me worked for you (linking it on a PC in a browser) and what DID work for me didn’t for you (linking the skill on a phone - albeit mine was iOS and yours was Android).

By the way, to find the Plex Skill on the Amazon website, you can use the dropdown on the left side of the search bar, select Alexa Skills, and then type Plex in the search box. - while logged in to your Amazon account. Should be the first skill in the search results.
