I can't get this thing to work AT ALL

I created my account and downloaded all of my movies onto the account. I downloaded the app to Roku and it worked successfully ONCE and now every time I log into Plex it says “it cannot find server”, none of the apps work on any other devices. And there is no number to call and have someone walk me through how to get this thing up and running. I have been trying for 5 months and can’t seem to figure it out. Help please!

It sounds like the Plex Server is no longer actively running on your PC. (I assume it’s on a PC, right?) Restart your PC and launch Plex from there. There should be an option somewhere to ensure the server starts with Windows. The PC hosting the server must be on and not sleeping (I think… mine is set to never sleep, but it definitely has to be on).

Hi AmazingRando24 - I have a MAC… and I always just got onto the plex internet site but never do anything else. I’ll attempt to locate the media server and open it before I go onto the site. Thank you

I think what you’re referring to as “the site,” most people around here call the Web App or Web Interface. It’s a portal to the server settings. If you can see your server there, and see the content you’ve loaded, then it’s at the very least running.

Sorry, this is all very new to me… I have thousands of movies downloaded to hard drives and play them through USB onto the TV and I’m just looking for a better way. Since you seem pretty knowledgeable about this site… Would you happen to know how I add movies to my the 600 I already downloaded from the initial setup? I found the server on my MAC and have linked it to the “web interface” so now I can see the movies I had originally downloaded… Maybe this stuff is just too far over my head

It’s not horrible once you get it going… The hardest part is trying to communicate what you’re seeing so that we can understand and help. If I’m following, you’ve got the Plex Web App open, and you have currently populated items in your Movie Library, right? If so, the hard part is over.

Now you just need a Client to play them on. The Web App is one of them. You should be able to select and play a movie from there. Is your TV a Smart TV? If so, you should be able to download Plex on it and run it from there. You can also use a Roku, AppleTV, FireStick, and several other devices to get the stuff from your server to your TV.

This all may sound hard, but I swear, once you’re up and running you’ll love it. It almost runs like Netflix or Hulu. Having your library at your fingertips is amazing.

What did you do? You don’t download movies to anything. If you already have movies on your hard drives, you create a library and point that library to the location on your hard drive with your movies. If this is what you did, then to add your other movies, you can either create more libraries, or edit your current library and add the folders to where your other movies are to this list. See https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200288926-Creating-Libraries for more info.

If you want to just add to the same Library copy\paste to the same folder on your hard disk. On the left side of the web app you should see the list of Libraries you already added, just place your cursor over the name of the Library then click the “…” to the right then click Scan Library File. After it completes you should see the new movies you just added.

Hope this Helps.
