Can't add media, plex tells me to download plex media server while its already running

Server Version#: 4.84.1
Player Version#:
Been struggling with this for a while, had server running on macbook and roku, then got smart tv and plex app. wouldn’t see server and now won’t allow me to add media. when i click on add media i get dialogue to download plex media server which is already installed and running.

usually when that happens it is because the client apps ( the web app is a client app) is not the same account that the server is claimed by.

Looking at your account you are signed into this forum with I see no server claimed by it at all.

I deleted everything plex related, restarted and have finally managed to re add my media libraries. thanks for your speedy response

Hello, I seem to be going in a circle to add my media. I have the Plex media server installed but keep getting prompted to download the Plex media server when clicking on + your media. How do I get the Plex media server on the same account? I deleted my original account and started over with a new username and password with the same result. Thank you for anything you can suggest.

I would look at your server logs and see what account it is signing into when it starts up.

You can either sign the player apps into that account.

Stop the server and remove the account data then claim the server with whichever account you want. Why am I locked out of Server Settings and how do I get in? | Plex Support

I have been unable to add media files and keep getting the “install plex media server” link CONSTANTLY. It’s a meddening loop and I am getting no help via support forums/FAQ. Thanks.

Not sure where you’ve been looking for help.
If Plex isn’t offering you an option to add media / libraries, this is usually because you’re trying to access an unclaimed server from a different subnet or using a different Plex account.

Is this about a new setup?
If so… make sure to access the server “locally” (using the host machine’s local IP address from within the same network; if your server is running on the same machine… browse to http://127.0.0.1:32400/web, otherwise use http://[PMS IP address]:32400/web). This should bring up the setup wizard where you can link your server to your account (or if you’re already past that, let you work with the server locally).

thanks for the reply.
this didn’t work. i did set up a yer ago. keep getting the message to instal the plex server which ive done 5 times to no avail

Are you on the same subnet when accessing the app? Are you signed in with the same account that’s linked to your server?

Yes. I have only ever had the one account. this is VERY frustrating.

Went through this process…

https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281528-why-am-i-locked-out-of-server-settings-and-how-do-i-get-in/

However, the plex media file referenced is NOT in that folder.
I also FINALLY received an error message that makes sense…
“You are not authorized to access this server”
Oddly enough this feel slike progress.

@liampelot Due to increased security and possibly due to an unresolved bug affecting PMS and MacOS 10.14 and older, your attempts to regain access to a working version of PMS have gone awry. I realize how that’s troubling, and I can help.

In another topic, I show How To Sign-out PMS on a MAC, Downgrade, and Reclaim

You will be downgrading to the last working PMS I know works on all MacOS 10.11.0 or greater.

If your computer is running MacOS 11.0.0 (Big Sur) or newer, you can upgrade PMS after a few days of being happy

Again sorry it’s been a struggle, but these hiccups are being sorted by MovieFan.Plex.

I am in the same loop! I can’t get anywhere. I have download PMS and then created my account but I get no where with it. I have deleted everything off my Mac and tried again but all I get is the same message!!

Until the fix is posted for regular users, only Plex Pass users can access the beta PMS with the install patches you probably need to run the latest version.

You can run 1.28.2.6151 just fine until then. Usually a new stable is released each month. It depends on how stable it is

Not my best reply but at least you have something to chew on.
