I disconnected from Remote Access and cannot re-enable it

Server Version#: DS418j
Player Version#: 4.12.3
Hi guys. I need your help. I accidentally clicked on the option to turn off the option to Remote Access my NAS, and now, my library does not display in the left navigation panel. If I go into the Settings section in the web browser, I have no settings available to click to re-enable Remote Access. If I click on the Plex icon that is on my taskbar and log into the server, there is a Settings section there and I can see the Remote Access option there, but none of the options are available for me to click on. I do see a message telling me that I must “First sign in” but my Synology NAS is not listed - instead, it is referencing my iMac.

Is there an easy way to re-enable all of this?
Please be gentle. I am alone doing all of this and I do not have anyone to help me - except for all of y’all.

Thank you!
Rochelle

This will be tricky on a Synology but can be done.

  1. You need desktop access to DSM if you haven’t already enabled SSH
  2. If SSH is enabled, the next question is: Is it open through the modem/router? (a dangerous configuration).
  3. Presuming you have all that.
  • ssh into the Synology using the extra options (ssh -L 8888:127.0.0.1:32400 ip.addr.of.syno) or Putty port forwarding 8888 -> 32400 from a Windows machine.

  • With that session established, let it sit idle. it will serve as the conduit.

  • Now open http://127.0.0.1:8888/web in your local browser.

You’ll be connected as if on the Synology’s console display (if it had one).

From there you can enable Remote Access.

Close down all connections when done except the Remote Access.

Hi Chuck.
Thank you so much for taking the time to help me. Unfortunately, I was not able to get very far with the instructions you provided.
From my iMac, I opened a Terminal session and entered the SSH command you provided, however I was not able to establish a session that allowed me to open the http://127.0.0.1:888/web page in either the Safari, Chrome, or Firefox browsers.
This week has been a bit rough for us, and if I can get at least one thing working for the kids, it would most definitely be a highlight.

Thank you again for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Rochelle,

I hope this is a typo above but will go with it again.

  1. On the Syno, Control Panel -> Terminal & SNMP -> Enable SSH -> OK (it will show port 22 which is important)

  2. From your mac terminal window: ssh -L 8888:127.0.0.1:32400 ip.addr.of.syno

  3. Sign into the Syno using your Syno username and let it sit there.

  4. On your Mac, in an incognito browser window: http://127.0.0.1:8888/web
You can also use the http://127.0.0.1:8888/manage endpoint.

This should have you in control of it so you can go to Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced and see what its “Sign in” status is.

If not signed it, it will show “Unclaimed”.

Chuck,
I got a little further this time. I got through step 1 (port 22 does display). When I go to the Terminal window and enter the information you recommended, I am prompted for a password. I think I have thrown every possible password at it with no luck. It just gives me a “Permission denied, please try again” message. I have been very diligent in keeping track of my passwords, so I am a bit confused as to why I can’t get in.
I am so close…
Thanks again, Chuck. You’re a saint - with LOTS of patience.

Rochelle,

This is good.

  1. In the browser, upper right corner. sign out of the web app
  2. Now start the sequence fresh

Should this fail, we will manually download logs and I will examine.

To download them:

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Open File Station
  3. Go to the Plex share and navigate into Library -> Application Support -> Plex Media Server
  4. Right click “Logs” -> “Compress to Logs.zip”
  5. Let it generate the ZIP file
  6. Download to your computer then upload here for me to inspect.

Hi Chuck.
My apologies for the delay in responding.
I signed out of the web app as instructed and retried accessing what I needed to using the terminal window and the information to type in. All I got were ssh permission denied errors. So instead, I figured I would try to at least do what you asked to download the Logs, but I cant even seem to find that. Here is what I did:
From my DSM webpage, I clicked File Station, but I could not find anything else that you mentioned in step 3. I am missing something… I am just not sure what.
Thank you for still trying to help me.

Rochelle
