Remote access from Synology

Server Version#: 1.25.5.5492-7000
Player Version#:

Hi, need a bit of help setting up my PMS on Synology for remote access. I’vekept the port as 32400, and have forwarded it in my router (Asus RT-AC68U), and as you can see from the screenshot below Plex says it’s accessible remotely, but has no IP addresses, and when I try using a device off my home network I can’t see it. I’m assuming there’s something I need to do in the synology, but I can’t quite work out what. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: So its randomly decided to become accessible remotely, but it’s saying it’s an ‘indirect’ connection to the server. The remote access screen still looks exactly the same as in the above screenshot.

First, if you’re opening PMS and getting the Plex/web app (which is at 32400), something is working.

The Unknown IP messages are almost always a network configuration problem.

I would like you to do the following:

  1. Verify DEBUG logging is enabled and VERBOSE logging is disabled. SAVE if you make any changes (Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced)

  2. Restart Plex

  3. Let it sit for 3 minutes - completely idle.

  4. Now download the logs ZIP file

  5. Attach the ZIP here

The logs will contain startup communication and the exchange between PMS (on the syno) and Plex.tv

This might seem like a really dumb question, but how do I restart the server?

hope i did it right

That was perfect.

Do you have a certificate installed on the Synology?

Your Plex certificate is new and good:

Valid	Wed, 16 Feb 2022 07:46:44 +0000	Wed, 16 Feb 2022 07:47:20 +0000

I’m gonna guess no because I don’t even know what you mean by certificate or how to install one on the Synology hahaha

Synology does provide the option to install theirs. They make it very easy.

I have reset your Plex certificate just to be safe.

Please restart DSM and see if anything improves.

What is your Synology connected to ? How does it get to the internet?

This is a BIG problem.

My synology is connected directly to the Asus RT-AC68U modem router

What certificate do I need to add to Synology? Its currently got 2 - the default synology and an RSA/ECC synology quickconnect certificate

Would the inability to get a public IP address be the reason I can’t access from app.plex.tv?

Hey there,

I’m having the same issue since updating DSM to the newest version the other day. Mind taking a look at my logs?

Without a public IP, PMS can do nothing. It can’t tell Plex.tv where it is.
The communication must exist.

All is has to do is connect to Plex.tv. TCP/IP networking will automatically tell it what the IP address is.

Your server is working OK from what I can see.

DSM 7 is a little pickier in the firewall than DSM 6. Don’t forget to either turn it OFF or manually set the ports in it. “auto-magic” auto-config doesn’t always work well.

If your modem/router UPNP works well then you’ll be ok. An ISP-provided modem/router is “Maybe”. Something upscale (e.g. pfsense) will be fine.

Firewall has been off and I have no idea what port I should be manually set it to. If gives me a blip of the greenlight that it’s available, then the second I try to play something, it goes Indirect. Any ideas?

The initial blip to green is it trying (waiting for plex.tv to confirm)
If Plex.tv can confirm (connect back to you on the port), it will stay green.

If you let it pick the port then your modem/router’s UPNP is assigning a port number. It’s sometimes necessary to sign into that modem/router and clear out ALL the old assignments – cheap software in there

If you manually pick a port, and manually port forward, that will work…

So I’ve just double checked everything and I can’t see where the issue is going to be.
The Syno has a static IP, it’s firewall is off, and there is port forwarding enabled for TCP of my router.

Could it be the firewall in my router preventing access?

For the record, I’ve had PMS with remote access running on my Shield for over a year with absolutely no issues whatsoever. (Until obvious recent issues with latest shield experience, which is why I’m trying to get it running on the Syno)

When you run canyouseeme.org’s port test, it comes back OK?

I just tried changing the port forwarding in my router from TCP only to TCP/UDP and that’s given me the IP addresses and supposed remote access, but app.plex.tv still can’t access it.

Port test came back ok
