Is there a setting to change this
Can you please give some more details of how your using Plex Media Server?
I have my movies on my plex and for some reason when I open a movie the list of the actors in the movie are just gray circles. they use to have the picture of the actor in it. I looked at a friends plex and his has the picture.
Same. It’s just like this with some for me. Like, a movie or TV show, it will have the icons for actors/actresses. Some actors/actresses are gray’d out… Some display. No clue why this happens…
I’ve had Plex for a long time…recently, I’ve also noticed that when I add a new TV show to my database, all metadata load EXCEPT for the main poster. I have to go in manually, and I notice that there are several posters available…but the one that was auto-chosen is blank…so I chose another one.
If there are no Actor Images and there used to be - that’s a problem. One I don’t have a solution for. Regarding a ‘wrong’ or ‘blank’ poster selection - that seems like a more serious issue than a missing Actor Image. That will probably take some advanced help, logs, etc.
If only some Actor Images are populated, that’s annoying, but you should go to the database in question, and see if there are Actor Images there to download. There probably aren’t.
Regarding TVDB they’re making it so hard to supply images - I gave up. For instance, ALL Actor Images have to be FROM THAT SHOW and if you want to place a picture of Nick Nolte in for The Mandalorian, you have to place the image of the Rodent he portrays, not the Actor - and I’m not doing that.
I started adding Actor Images to TMDB instead and if you don’t have any for that Actor that just means I haven’t gotten to it yet and could use a little help! Get involved. Lend a Hand. When you see an image you added - and it fits inside Plex’s Head Chopper 9000 - you’ll feel a sense of pride you just can’t get any other way.

Avatars within plex are shared between libraries regardless of the source. So whatever the last fetch for the avatar was be it a movie (TMDB) or TV show (TVDB) that is what will show as the avatar icon. Needless to say I HATE THIS DESIGN!!!
I created a feature request to try and improve this but alas radio silence so far
