I do not get audio on my Plex system when watching Live TV. I cannot get audio on live TV when using Plex on my NVIDIA system. This is new (1 month old). I have the fiber audio cable connected from my TV to the sound bar. Everything else plays audio great - HULU, Netflix, Amazon Primer, Music streaming, etc. However, when I try to do live tv on my PLEX, Video is great, but no Audio. Now, when I go to the HDHomerun directly and try to watch live TV, no audio, until, get this, I turn off the TV and turn it back on again. I then get auido on LIve TV. This process does not work for PLEX live TV. I got plex just for over the Air TV and DVR capabilities and got rid of my DirectTV, so I really want to get this to work. Could my TV be the problem? It is a toshiba 55" Regza - 55ZV650U. THanks for any help as I have been fighting this for too long
Have you tried taking the sound bar out of the mix and see if you get audio with just the tv? I say this because I had a sound bar that I was constantly having to make changes in apps to get sound, eventually replaced it and now I always have audio.
Also the hdhomerun app has a setting for audio pass through, don’t remember if it is set enable by default, I would check that and switch it around see if it make a difference. I assume you are running all these apps on your shield.
There can be a myriad of reasons why this happens but here are some thoughts. I assume your Shield is plugged in to the TV (HDMI) and then your soundbar is plugged in to the TV (as you said using an optical cable). Generally, this will pass audio to your soundbar unprocessed (and then your soundbar has to make sense of it and play it). Not all soundbars have the same support (some support DD5.1 some DTS, some Atmos, some all of the above). Chances are the LiveTV signal comes in as DD51 (or stereo). Stereo is universally supported so you should be ok there. Re: DD51, if your soundbar does not support that then you have to tell Plex to convert it to Stereo before feeding it to your soundbar. Most soundbars support DD51 but maybe if your is REALLY old? Anyway, in the Plex client (on the Shield) settings, you can specify what audio, your audio system supports. Make sure those settings are correct. In my setup, my receiver does not know what to do with DTS sound, so I have it configured so that Plex converts DTS to DD51 before sending a signal to the receiver, otherwise I don’t hear any sound out of my speakers. Also make sure your TV is configured to pass through sound to your soundbar (aka not process it, just feed it raw). That would be on your TV settings.
I hope this helps!
rljnc and techtevrenidis thank you for the suggestions! This is great help. rljnc - I will check the setting in the Homerun app, and yes I am running all apps on my shield. Tachtevrenidis - Yes, my shield is plugged into my TV and Soundbar plugged into TV via Digital audio out to Soundbar. I have a brand new sony sound bar I bought this weekend to get my audio working better and mostly it does except for this problem. I will check to see if my sound bar supports DD51, i would think so since it is brand new. I will check my tv settings and those are poor as the TV is older, so that might be the issue. I will check to see my Plex audio settings as well. I might try setting plex to Stereo and see what that does. I will give these a try some time this week but might have to wait until the weekend for further troubleshooting, thanks a lot, I will update if I get some more information
fyi my TV is 10 years old (Toshiba), my receiver is 5 years old (Onkyo) and the Shield is 6 months old. Audio passthrough works for me and DD51 is supported. The only complaint I have is that when on audio passthrough, I think my receiver’s processor is weak and every time I fast-forward, while the video transition is smooth, the audio cuts out for about a second. It is annoying!
