I recently set up a 1522+ Synology NAS, attempting to load my content there onto Plex. No luck. The Plex “add library” function only sees content within my Macbook Air, not the NAS itself in the Location section of Finder. Plex does see the NAS as I named it. (see screenshot)
Shooting in the dark here, but you might need to go into “Shared Folder” in the Control Panel and give the Plex user at least read-only access to your library shares. It will need read-write if you want to be able to add and delete media using the plex interface. Personally I do not give any server application the right to mess with my media files.
Or alternatively, you may not yet have set up your Media folders as shared volumes?
Are you running Plex Media Server on the Synology or on the Mac?
You tagged the thread server-mac, but from the screenshot it appears PMS is running on the Synology.
What version of PMS is installed?
Settings → Bill’s NAS → General.
What version of DSM is installed on the Synology?
Login to the NAS → Control Panel → General
Where on the NAS are your media files located (what shared folder)?
If running Plex Media Server on the Synology, here’s some documents that can help.
Thanks for that! I had a sneaky feeling the user had changed, but I could not find PlexMediaServer as a user - now I can.
Follow-up question: I always had the Plex user as having read-only access to the library files. Given that I don’t manage those files using Plex at all, is there any need for PlexMediaServer to have read/write access to the media shares?
I did give read/write permission but since I can’t currently access my NAS within Plex that isn’t a problem. I think it will end up being an obscured setting or permission I have wrong in my NAS. I’ve requested a screen share from Synology to check things.
Not sure how to answer but here’s my guess. I downloaded Plex to my NAS as a Synology package.
PMS? Plex Media Server? If so, I have v 1.29.2.6364-7000.
DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 3.
The media I want is in a folder I created and named within Shared Folder.
I read some of the articles you directed me to and one in particular makes me wonder.
I was having trouble accessing my NAS through the network Location on my Mac. Synology instructed me to create a Synology Drive folder in Locations on the Mac, and put my content there. I did and it’s worked well since. The article said not to use Synology files such as Photos, Video, and Music. It didn’t specify Synology Drive but could that be an issue? I hope not since it’s works accessing my content on the computer.
Thank you to everyone who has offered suggestions, I think I reviewed and responded to all but let me know if I missed something. As of this moment, Synology isn’t offering much help. The following is their most recent reply.
"We only provide Plex packages in Package Center. Because Plex belongs to 3rd party package, Synology has limited information about Plex Media Server as it is developed by a 3rd party. Plex has not released our package center updates to counter this. Synology does not make Plex, Plex developers provide us with the packages to release on our package center, so we have no control nor information about what issues they have with their program.
If you still have trouble with these issues, as I mentioned before, Synology does not create the package or assist in making it, so you will need to reach out to Plex to see if there are other issues at work. They can be contacted at https://support.plex.tv/"
I believe I understand what you meant “Everything is through Safari/Chrome to the PMS window which is PMS running on the Syno”. All my attempts have been in Chrome. My mention of Synology Drive in Finder is just how I can access my content for adding/editing.
I read the instructions in the FAQ URL. When I followed them, the attached screenshot is the result. Besides PMS having read/write permission, you’ll see I did that for everything else I thought might need it as well.
I’ve pressured Synology into a screen share session to make sure I have their end of it correct. They’d rather not, repeatedly telling me Plex is a third party app.
Now what happens when you try to create a library in Plex Media Server? Can you navigate to the desired directory?
Note that when navigating in Plex, you will see the full directory structure, some of which is hidden in Synology File Station.
For example, if Archived Matthies Video-Photos exists on Volume 1, then you will need to select /volume1 first, when adding a folder to a Plex movie, tv show, etc library.
My content is in volume 1 but I still don’t have an option to see anything other than what’s in my Macbook Air. Nothing appears like your example screen.
I’m attempting to replicate what you show but get nothing other than what you see in the screen shot. I’ve given Synology remote access and given that Plex appears to be adding a photos library now, they may have made some changes.
