Reconnecting to Synology NAS

Server Version#: 7
Player Version#: 4.69.1

I accidentally deleted my NAS server from my Plex player. How do I “discover” the server and reconnect to it? The server is on the same network as my PC (windows-based) but is not physically connected to it via cable, only via wifi. The server still appear on my DSM when I log in. Any help is appreciated.

This is an easy recovery.

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 Plex app - Use the (default) KEEP option

  2. Install the same package again - Use the “Plex Claim Token” option

  • Click the “Get Claim Token” link.
  • New browser tab will open
  • COPY the link to the browser
  • Return to the installer page
  • PASTE the token in the small window
  • Click NEXT to continue installing.

It will take about 20 seconds longer for the installer and Plex.tv to communicate

It will respond and tell you that It’s claimed to your Plex username.

When PMS starts, give it an additional minute to synchronize with Plex.tv

Now open it by the direct NAS IP address (don’t use the package center link yet)

Confirm it’s all back.

This may be a stupid question but how do I uninstall DSM? I am accessing the web version, so I may not have installed anything on my PC

Your Synology is running DSM 7, correct?

If so, uninstall Plex Media Server (not DSM 7) from the NAS using the Synology Package Manager. Then proceed with the rest of the steps.

I have uninstalled Plex Media Server from DSM.

When I reinstall, there was no “plex claim token” option.

My steps:

  • I clicked on “Plex Media Server” under “Join Beta” in DSM7
  • They asked me to choose the Volume to install (I chose Volume 1 but they mentioned that I have previously used Volume 2, so I go with it)
  • They then asked me to enter the path, or leave blank for default (I left blank)
  • After installing, the only option I had was to click to open the Plex app, which came back to the same point

Any point did I do anything wrong?

@ongcheeming

Are you wanting to reclaim only

-or-

Reclaim + Migrate to DSM 7 ? (Is the “Plex” shared folder empty ?)

I already have content in my NAS and using Plex for a while.

Recently, Plex has been having issues assessing my content (drive was there but not accessible, had a cross icon), so I went in to look at the settings. I updated my Plex version to the latest version and upgraded to DSM 7 as well. However, it didn’t solve my issue. Then I did the stupid thing to remove the NAS drives from my Plex player and realised I can’t connect back.

Later I also installed Synology’s video station but realised it didn’t work as well as Plex, so I wanted to see if there’s any way I can get Plex working again. Video Station was also making some weird changes to my drives and now I cannot see some of those content I transferred to Video Station in my File Station.

Hope this explains where I am right now.

Any further thoughts what I can do next?

When you upgraded from DSM 6 → DSM 7, —

  1. Did you uninstall the Plex package before upgrading?
    -or-
  2. Did you upgrade DSM 7 and click “Repair” (as prompted by DSM) ?
    -or-
  3. Did you install PMS again after DSM 7 upgrade ?

Not being able to see content is a Permission problem which is well documented.

Post #17 (the first) is for the Shared Folder.
Post #18 (the second) corrects the permissions inside shared folders – which is sometimes needed.

I did not uninstall before upgrading.
I used “Repair” when prompted during the upgrading.
I also reinstalled PMS after upgrading.
I have also changed the permissions as follows:
Local users: Plex → Read/Write
System internal users: PlexMediaServer → Read/Write

However, my NAS still did not show up in Plex Media

Previously, the folders were there but with a “cross”, so I removed them. Now I can’t get them back at all.

@ongcheeming

Wow. Regrettably, you did just about everything wrong which could have been done wrong.

We can fix it but it will take a few iterations.

Let’s go back to the beginning.

What do you see in the “Plex” shared folder?

  • Do you see “Library” ?
  • Going deeper - “Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server” ?

It’s okay. We can figure out slowly.

I cannot find the Plex folder in DSM. Is this a problem?

  1. Control Panel - Shared Folders

  2. Scroll down to the Plex shared folder (if not here then it got deleted along the way)

  3. EDIT the Plex shared folder → Permissions tab

  4. Give your username R/W permission so you can see it in FileStation.

Now tell me what you find.

You should find Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server

I could do 1 to 4, but I do not find Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server
Where am I supposed to find it?

Some further considerations:
(1) I realised I can access my NAS from an older laptop. When this laptop was turned on, Plex App can access the folders on my NAS. While I can “see the folders”, I can play the videos - error message “Please check the file exist and the necessary drive is mounted”.
(2) While unable to access Plex for a while, I installed Synology Video Station and sync one of my NAS folder with it. Since then, that particular folder is not appearing on my Plex App at all. I have since deleted SVS.

@ongcheeming

Please confirm for me –

  1. When you open the “Plex” shared folder, you find a “Migration.log” file
  2. When you look at the contents of that file, you find something similar to:
Plex Media Server migration to DSM 7 started: Sat Oct 30 15:26:16 EDT 2021
=== Sat Oct 30 15:26:16 EDT 2021 === Start: Change ownership
=== Sat Oct 30 15:29:45 EDT 2021 === Completed: Change ownership
=== Sat Oct 30 15:29:45 EDT 2021 === Start: Convert symbolic links
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Completed:  Convert symbolic links
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Start: Migrate Plex Media Server
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Completed: Migrate Plex Media Server
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Completed: Migrate Plex Media Server
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Start: Clean /volume1/Plex
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Completed: Clean /volume1/Plex
  1. You have a ‘PlexMediaServer’ shared folder, with an AppData sub-folder, and Plex Media Server folder under that with what looks like your server metadata.

If you have the following -

  1. Plex share is empty except for “Migration.log”
  2. Migration.log" shows several steps with the final step being that of “Clean: /volumeX/Plex”
  3. PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/ – with several sub directories exists

Then it appears your server is fully migrated to DSM 7

I want to make certain no data is lost hence why I’m verifying everything.

The last step before we reconnect the server -

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Using FileStation, navigate → PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server
  3. Right-click LogsCompress to Logs.zip
  4. When that completes, download it
  5. Attach the ZIP file here.

I will review it to make sure there are no hidden network errors blocking PMS from working as it is now.

I don’t see any migration log file. I suspect this is not the Plex folder you are referring to as I created this one, not the system.

Let me know if I am looking at the right things based on the screenshot I’ve provided. I am keen to start from scratch to get Plex back on track.

I am indeed looking for “Migration.log” in the folder named “Plex”.

I see you have other “Plex*” folders. Those are your media ?

I think, which I ask you to confirm.

  1. You upgraded to DSM 7
  2. You’ve tried to install the Plex app for DSM 7
  3. Your metadata (“Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server” folder) still exists.

Is this correct?

Yes, all the Plex* folders (including Plex folder itself) contain my media.

I confirm

  1. I have upgraded to DSM7

  2. I have installed Plex app for DSM7

  3. I cannot find the meta data (Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server" - any idea where can I locate this?

Main thing is I cannot find the meta data… any idea where I can locate this?
