I have a project that will have two plex servers in docker, one for movies and series that will be managed by me and a music server that will be managed by my father, but I wanted to separate the libraries so that each one can be managed like I do Would you connect this second movie account so I could listen to it on TV without having to disconnect and how would the plex pass be? Would I have to pay the subscription twice?
There is no need to switch accounts in order to access another server.
You can grant access to the libraries on your server to another Plex user.
And the other way around.
Therefore, it is possible to get access to your father’s server.
That is only for consuming the media.
All administrative features (like adding new media) can only be performed by the respective server’s owner.
So you will have two servers in two separate (virtual) machines.
One is claimed by your own plex.tv account.
The other is claimed by your father’s plex account.
You then grant each other access to your media. https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/features/remote-access-server-sharing/
The shared library(s) will appear in the side bar of your Plex clients and can be “pinned” for fast access and contribution to the Home page.
A Plex Pass (PP) is useful for server owners, but mostly for movies/shows. A PP is also useful for users of all media, regardless of the pass status of the server.
These two options combine to have me say:
- The account with the PP should be the admin of the Movies/Shows libraries.
- A second account (non-PP) can be used for this, owned by your father, and is the admin of the music server. When your father wants to manipulate the music contents, he must log in as that non-PP account and make changes.
- To view either server’s contents, I’d recommend you both log in as users of the PP either as managed users or with separate accounts invited into the home of the PP account. Both of these accounts should be “invited” to the non-PP account that manages the music.
If this works the way I think, it will give your father and only him the ability to edit the music content of “his” music server, and you the ability to edit the content of “your” video server. Depending on whether you made 2 accounts (clients use managed user accounts) or 4 accounts (2 server and 2 client/user accounts), it should still work the same.
The reason for using managed users under the PP account, or two new accounts invited to the home of the PP account, is to be able to utilize the PP positives such as free mobile app use and PP-specific features for videos (intro/credit skip). I don’t think there is a particular reason to need a PP on a music-only server, so only one PP would need to be purchased. (Edit: Incorrect, I forgot about Sonic Analysis. See replies)
Honestly, as long as you both trust the other not to manipulate the other’s contents, you can combine them into one server and you both just log in as the admin account, and don’t need to do all this complex work.
^^^ this.
Just give your father a managed user account for his regular media consumption.
For library curation, he can “Switch User” to your account.
(of course it can still be a bother to have to do this, and it can be inconvenient if you forget to switch back)
ok got it thanks for the answer you already clarified my question one more thing you asked there would only be one thing on the music server that would use the plex pass for sonic analysis
Ah, I forgot about sonic analysis. In this case, if that is an important feature, then I’d suggest using one account with separate managed user accounts for you and your father (for viewing), and swapping to the admin user only to manipulate the server.
If you must have a hard line of separation between the two media servers (trust issues), then the other option is separate accounts for each of you, each owning a different server, and each having a PP. If money is no obstacle, then this can work well too. Just invite the other user to eachother as “friends” to access the other’s libraries.
ok that would be enough I think plex should have a function to let a specific user to manage the library without being the administrator
Ah, I see. Like you would each use a managed user account under the PP account, but only give “admin” rights to specific libraries to specific users. This isn’t currently possible, but is kind of “simulated” by what I suggested up above.
ok thanks a lot for your help have a great day ![]()
