I am trying to access 20 years of home videos in an easy way through Plex. The folder view works great since I have already sorted all my videos in a yearly folder structure. However, in Plex, all the folders just look like grey boring boxes. I tried putting a jpg inside the folder, and in the main folder, with the same name as the folder, but it doesn’t pick up either. How can I get Plex to show an image instead of the grey folder?
Folder view does not support folder images.

Wow, I am a bit surprised because it would be a very nice feature and quite easy to implement, like on Kodi.
Can I ask quickly how you would organize a home video library to look good and be easy to access through Plex?

The Naming Home Series document has an example using a TV Show library and structure for media organized by year.
Since it uses a TV Show library, also look at the Local Media Assets - TV Shows document. It has information regarding custom series & season posters.
