[Implemented] AirPlay Support

If this can be worked out it could be nice.

Airplay from Plex Home Theater or Windows 8 desktop client to Apple TV.

Below is a link for the MOG desktop app which has native AirPlay support. Granted it is audio only.

please don't forget audio only.

i would love to send music from the pms directly to airport express stations.

+ one for this. To be able to make playlists in plex clients and then send to any airplay targets such as airport express, any airplay speakers etc. would be fantastic.

I'm another for this.  With one ATV2 that is JB and (will hopefully get it's own plex client back) and an unjailbroken ATV3 and an iphone currently the stock ATV3 can be used an my "plex client" through the phone using air play.

I've been looking at some android tablets that I'd love to use in the same manner, browse plex on the table and set the video to a stock apple tv (and/or upnp based devices as well).

Having it in the web client would be even better - it the plex server able to push the video out via airplay/upnp etc.

I'm in on the audio portion of this too.  I've pretty much got Plex nailed down as a video server, but for Audio, I'm still relying on JRiver MediaCenter coupled with Airfoil for windows to ship the audio to my sound system.  I would dearly love to see Plex get to the point where it was my primary media app for audio as well as video.  One piece of that is the ability to transmit the audio being played from the server to an airplay destination (especially as newer AV receivers have been getting built-in airplay servers).  The other portion of that is the ability to control what the server is playing, and where it's directing the output from an android/iOS app.  Once you've got that, you can have a full rich UI to control your audio anyplace you want via your tablet or phone, the centralized metadata/tagging on the server, and get your sound wherever you want it.  This is pretty much nirvana.

I did a bit of poking around, and found someone who's created a pure java airplay client, able to detect airplay destinations and ship audio to them. If it can be done in java, and the source is available, it shouldn't be horrendous to get this functionality built into Plex server.

http://www.ioncannon.net/utilities/1436/java-airplay-client/  - here's the java implementation I dug up.

Having said that, I have experimented with pointing Plex at my existing music collection, and the results weren't entirely satisfactory; my collection is nearly entirely in FLAC format, and while Plex picked up a lot of the metadata correctly, there were definitely numerous examples where it got the metadata wrong.  If the devs put in server->airplay streaming w/ mobile remote control, I'll start reporting metadata issues for fixes ;)

There is also an open DLNA standart specifying the Digital Media Server, Digital Media Controller and Digital Media Renderer. It's very similar to AirPlay, only it's an open standart. The DMR endpoint functionality is being built in to most newer networking AV-recievers, TV's, and network music players like Denon Cocoon. In fact, my 2011 Samsung plasma TV can act as a DMR off the shelf, but to send AirPlay video to it I'd have to buy an Apple TV.

Thus, I'd much prefer DLNA capabilities over AirPlay.

Surprisingly, Windows Media Player can act as a DMS/DMC, so you can check if your devices are DLNA DMR capable with any windows PC.

Thus, I'd much prefer DLNA capabilities over AirPlay.

Then feature request it (assuming it is not already there)

You post is kinda out of place in this thread.

This would be *extremely* useful in my home!

Actually, the iOS device *doesn't* stay in the middle - it initiates the connection, but after that, traffic flows directly from the server to the ATV.

Is this really true? For me, Plex to Apple TV using an iPhone 4S is quite grainy. Plex to Apple TV using an iPad 3 is always good.

Because of this, I've always assumed that since the iPad has a more powerful processor, it streamed better. If the mobile device gets out of the way, both of those streams should be identical in quality. No?

Tony, have you checked your Streaming Quality settings on your iPhone? I have no problem streaming FullHD material from my iPhone to AppleTV even away from home.

Just to add my +1 and also my use case, I have an old O2 Joggler (a touchscreen tabletop tablet) which is now running Android ICS and the plex client. However (almost certainly due to it's hardware limitations) it won't play back video/audio.

BUT, if I could airplay from it to my Apple TV (like I can from my iPhone) it would make a great coffee table media controller.

No, I hadn't. Those default values are safe but pretty poor quality. Looking forward to testing this soon. Thank you!
