I’m sure I’m in the minority but I don’t have any cable subscriptions. My mother and I live in separate households but do share accounts for just a handful of streaming services but we have a schedule planned out for the year of services. Alternating streaming services per month. Meaning that at most, each service gets subscribed at least 3 months out of the whole year. Creating diversity. I don’t watch loads on these services but my mom does.
Obviously, when my mom opened up this Discover on her Roku, I explained what might happen with its features but it wasn’t exactly set in stone. It’s being tested.
When I returned home and did a maintenance check of my moms server, she already knew how to engage with Watchlist using Discover. So, yes, there IS potential there. But I also realized what else was problematic. This huge hellbent problem of platform domination.
I received a phone call from her later that evening asking why she wasn’t able to select a corresponding service to play a movie using Plex like how it was done on her tablet.
Again, this freakin’ thing with Roku policies or it literally could be any major platform that won’t play nice, will cause so much angst with these ongoing features. Again, it’s confusing for those who want it, but then can’t use said feature all because it’s a power play amongst these companies.
While my mom is willing to give it a try, I am not. Im in my 30’s and I sound like an old man telling people to get off my lawn.
While I am paying for subscriptions, its far less than what others are paying and it’s not how I primarily watch content. Plex is but locally.
While she may have not found the x rated content (she didnt use search from what I can tell), it did break the integrity of Plex’s relationship with the admins and users.
I would have, like others, been open to more possibilities but was very cynical and angered from past experiences with rollouts and many other things. Plex has done some great things but the bad out way the accomplishments more so.
@ChuckPa it’s sad you’re being dragged for this. Thank you for the updates.
