Currently, Grid View in personal libraries pulls a “poster” or “portrait” frame from the video as it is scanned and uses it as the artwork for that video. This vertically heavy view looks very unnatural and silly for video files that do not have any art associated with them.
I’d like to request a feature that splits Grid View into both “Grid View (Poster)” and “Grid View (Frame)”.
-
Grid View (Poster): The current default Grid View where each video’s listing has a vertical portrait-sized poster created from a still frame of the video.
-
Grid View (Frame): A new Grid View that pulls a still frame of the video and fits it to a 16x9 horizontal landscape frame.
I run a film production business and I use my Plex server to store, backup, and play all of the exports that I send to clients. The current poster-sized Grid View view is just an eye sore while going through my catalog, especially as a cinematographer. Since PLEX already has a frame grabber built in, I would assume that this new view would be very easy to implement.

+1 Also it would be nice to save the view setting individually in each library. In this mode, @Anthony_Jr can view films in poster view and work in landscape view

It’s a really big problem for me , is there any progress on this ? All my video format are 16/9 , seeing them in poster size is a non sens :/.
It appears the recent update of the Plex Web library pages also delivered the requested feature. My home video library (other videos) is showing all items in landscape mode.
There’s no option to pick the perspective for those posters/frames though.
@tom80H Really appreciate you connecting back into this topic. That was exciting to see.
Jumped into my Deliverables section in Plex (where I keep all my exports for my film production clients) and noticed that the Mac app also reflects the change that you noted. The library shows all videos as 16:9 images, as asked. Extremely welcome to see, considering I asked about it nearly two years ago.
I’m not sure how they’ve decided to manage the view, but my assumption is that if the library’s agent is “Personal Media” - it will display the 16:9 grid view… Which honestly makes the most sense.
Anyway, big thanks to the Plex team for this one.
Kind of curious when they snuck in this change, and if I just didn’t notice the day the switch flipped because it “just looked right”.
