I just added a movie to Plex. When I added it to the library it pulled an IMDB rating of 2.4. When you look it up on IMDB’s website the actual IMDB rating is 6.7. Does anyone know why this happened?
I suspect this is new-movie volatility, and Plex probably has data from a few days ago.
Plex integrates the data from multiple sources and caches it. It takes a little bit of time to refresh from origin sources.
Refresh the metadata in a week or so.
What Volts said… just take a look at the detailed rating page on IMDb. That’s quite a wide spread… especially some really bad reviews from their top voters
The ‘Good’ Ratings, like:
“Super, Great, Fantastic” are made by the cast and crew.
In a few days this terrible movie will land from it’s lofty score and carry a score more like the truth as more real viewers check in - and 2.4 seems about right.
In Short - if you’re relying on IMDB ratings to tell you what you need to watch you’re either going to watch a lot of crap - or miss some pretty good ones. Like everything else IMDB is involved in - it’s SuckTown.
Are you implying that the positive reviews are people associated with the movie, their moms, shills, and paid reviewers?
Well I never …
Why, Yes… yes I am…lol
The Proof was Breach (2020) - wherein the first few days saw it with a decent rating - then when I watched a few minutes of it about a week later and went back to IMDB I saw it had tanked from ‘Stellar Performances’ to ‘Really Stinky P.U.’
Another one was whatever that Movie is with Amber Man-Beater in it where ONE POSTER/RATER signed in with 150 different names Amber-Bashing to the point where we have no idea if that movie is any good or not.
lol
I agree with everyone that is saying that IMDB’s ratings are flawed. That’s why I use Rotten Tomatoes as my default. It only uses IMDB when there’s no Rotten Tomatoes reviews. That being said, Plex still pulled the 2.4 rating from IMDB. The IMDB score is still 6.7. This makes no sense at all. How could it pull the low rating when it was at 6.7.
Granted the score has gone down to 6.6 since I posted this several hours ago. Back to my original quesiton. Where did the 2.4 come from?
The Plex Movie agent on your Plex server doesn’t pull directly from IMDB, RT, etc.
It pulls from a centralized caching database layer, which is populated and refreshed occasionally.
My hunch is that IMDB showed 2.4 a while ago, and that’s when the data was fetched. If you Refresh Metadata in a few days, you should get updated data.
Ah… I understand. You’d think they’d have it real-time… but I’m sure there’s technical reasons they don’t. I’ll try updating it in a few days. Appreciate it.
Just a little followup. I’ve updated metadata daily with no change… the rating is standing at 6.6. I’ve also moved the file out of plex folders, deleted it, emptied the trash and cleaned the bundles. Moved it back into a Plex folder and scanned for changes. It continues to come up with a 2.4 (even though it still states 6.6 on IMDB.
Even more interesting? I checked TheMovieDB and all but one actor has a photo, but on my side only 3 come up with photos… so it’s not picking up that either.
I understand what you’re saying Tom… but the rating is 6.6 and it’s weighted to include both the top voters and the fake reviews. If the wieghted is 6.6 (and 2.4 is nowhere on the site), shouldn’t it come up as 6.6 when you refresh? I think 3 days is enough to allow for it to ‘catch up’.
TMDB is quickly becoming a PITA due to their Actors/Seasons listing - and Plex simply can’t deal with it in a useful way. There is no work-around.
When Picard cries - it’s bad.
Maybe. It’s always possible something needs to be “plunged” on the back end - sometimes Plex folks pop up and say they’ll kick something.
But also it often takes more than a few days. That’s why I suggested waiting a week. ![]()
I’ll keep trying it daily. It’s really a one-off. I haven’t noticed this happening to other movies in the past, so even if it’s never right… no big deal.
Which agent are you using?
Using the Plex Movie agent, I just created a test file. Matched Kill Plan (2021).
IMDb rating 6.3, decent cast images.
Still obviously delayed - the IMDb rating is still going up. But interesting you’re getting different results.
If you aren’t using the Plex Movie agent, try the “Plex Dance”.
I’m using the Plex Movie agent. It must have JUST changed. All I did was refresh and it updated to 6.3 AND it now has all the actor photos! You were correct. I needed to give it enough time. I was just being impatient.
