Why some movies in my Plex take ratings from various websites?

Hello, I noticed that in my Plex my movies have ratings from different/various websites randomly. For example, movie X has ratings from IMDb, but movie Y has ratings from Rotten Tomatoes or TMDB.

Why is that like that and how can I fix it? I want all my movies have ratings from IMDb. How do I do that?

Plex uses the ratings source that was selected when it initially scanned the movie. If you change the ratings source, the new source is only used for movies going forward. Plex does not retroactively change ratings, unless you update the metadata for a movie/library.

So, change the ratings source to IMDB and update the metadata for each library.

  • Edit the desired movie library (mouse over library name, click on three dots to the right, choose Edit).
  • Choose Advanced.
  • Select Plex Movie as the agent.
  • Select desired source (IMDB) for cast list, ratings, etc.
  • Save changes.
  • Refresh the metadata for the library.
  • Repeat for each movie library.

I don’t think I’m able to do that. I have more than 300 movies there, I can’t manually change each of them. I went in settings, changed everything to IMDb as possible as I could. Scanned libraries, but yeah it still randomly shows ratings from various sources. So aggravating. Is it possible for developers to make it easier, so after changing in settings all movies get ratings from IMDb? Because manually changing every single movie from hundreds of movies is almost not possible or extremely tiring and needs a lot of time.

You don’t change it for each movie. You change it for each library.

Scanning the library does not work. You have to refresh the metadata.

you could import the library again, but you will lose the watched metadata flag.
Not sure what is worse tbh

Oh, I don’t want that either.

Oh okay, that’s not bad. Will try later and see if it fixes my issue. Thanks.

Okay, I just did what you advised me. Edited Movie library and set settings here like that:

Then refreshed metadata for that library and yet, it still gives me ratings from the sources I don’t want

Plex uses the ratings source that was selected when it initially scanned the movie.

How sure are you of this?

I have movies that I added on the same day (10 days ago and even the same hour of the day) and of the seven 5 have IMDB ratings and 2 have Rotten Tomatoes ratings.

I see cast actors photos are disappeared now… I feel so aggravated with Plex. Problems after problems…

Actor portraits are only available if ‘Cast List Source’ = ‘The Movie Database’

Tried to change it and refresh metadata, but they aren’t appearing still. Trying to repair with uninstaller. Opened some window, didn’t even ask me anything, wanted to look some file, it wasn’t in opened location - repair failed. Now uninstalling Plex and will try to reinstall. So frustrating…

Thanks for the info. Wasn’t aware of that.

That is how it works on my system. I’ve tested it before, adding a movie, then changing settings, then adding another movie. Each time PMS used the current settings for the added movie and did not change things for prior additions. Also, refreshing the metadata, either on a per library or per movie basis, updates things with the current settings.

One other thing to check. Make sure Plex Movie is at the top of the list in your agents settings.

Go to:
PMS Settings → Agents → Movies → Plex Movie
PMS Settings → Agents → Movies → The Movie Database

In both, move Plex Movie to the top of the list. Move Local Media Assets (Movies) below Plex Movie. This will give the downloaded metadata precedence over metadata embedded in the movie file.

Do this before you refresh the metadata.

Also, note @OttoKerner’s info regarding cast photos. Set Cast List Source = The Movie Database.

Settings on my system:

Set Plex Movie as Agent in Library settings (Editing Libraries):

PMS Settings → Agents → Movies → Plex Movie
‘Plex Movie’ is top choice. ‘Local Media Assets (Movies)’ is lower.

PMS Settings → Agents → Movies → The Movie Database
‘Plex Movie’ is top choice. ‘Local Media Assets (Movies)’ is lower.

Plex Movie settings.
This is global. You only have to edit it in one location, either at Library Level or Settings → Agents.
Note: Set Cast List Source = TMDB to download cast pictures.

Results after metadata refresh.

Right, but as I said, I added 7 movies on the same day, in the same hour.
5 used IMDB 2 used Rotten Tomatoes.
And yes, that is the way my agents are setup, have been for 3 or 4 years now.

Understand. No idea why your system used different ratings sources for movies added at essentially the same time. I have not seen that with my system.

I found a couple of old threads about trouble downloading metadata. One recommendation is to turn off IPv6 if enabled (PMS Settings → Network). Also, sometimes there is just a glitch in the system and you have to refresh the metadata to fix it.

I uninstalled Plex, removed all directories and installed from the start. Finally cast photos of actors got fixed, then changed ratings as you said only from IMDb and refreshed metadata. I also had to manually mark played and unplayed movies and I have almost 500 movies in library and I was doing it at 1AM, while my wife was waiting for me in the bed. You can imagine my torment lol. Anyway, while cast photos got fixed, ratings still show me from other sources. So, I did all these painful and time consuming things in vain. Most movies got IMDb ratings, but there are still a few ones that still get from other sources. For example:

I give up. I don’t know if it’s bug or not, but develops should look in this thread and fix it.

For some reason the IMDB rating is not available for this movie. Don’t know if it is licensing, technical, or something else.

Look at Await Further Instructions (2018):
https://meta.plex.tv/m/4971408?lang=en&ratings=1&reviews=1&extras=1
It contains the line: imdb_ratings audience_score=“0” source=“imdb”
Even though the rating on imdb.com is 4.8.

Now look at Airplane! (1980):
https://meta.plex.tv/m/0080339?lang=en&ratings=1&reviews=1&extras=1
It contains the line: imdb_ratings audience_score=“78” source=“imdb”
7.8 is the rating on imdb.com and is what is shown in Plex.

I have a few other movies for which IMDB ratings are not available. Info in other threads says the Plex license for IMDB.com data only covers cinematic releases, so information on shorts & other such movies is not available to Plex. Some of the movies for which I do not have imdb.com data were cinematic releases, so there may be other licensing restrictions as well.

Some additional info:

Oh, wow. So this is where dog’s head is buried… Interesting and sad, because I only pay attention to IMDb ratings. Anyway, thanks for the information.
