Inconsistent behavior when playing TV shows

Hi,

Let me start by saying that I am relatively new to Plex, but I’m loving it overall.

I have an issue that is more of an inconvenience than anything else and was hoping someone could help me out. I have 60+ TV shows in my library, all of them named using the guidelines as outlined here on this site: (TV/Show Name/Season Num/Show Name - sXXeYY). When I go in to the TV show’s “page”, I sometimes see simply a play button, while other times I see the option to play sXXeYY (where that is the next unwatched episode of the show). Why is this inconsistent and how would I go about fixing it?

I’m running version 1.1.4.2757 on my Drobo NAS, if you need that.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Tom

Plex keeps track of which episode you played already in a show.
If you have test-played already an episode of a particular show, then Plex offers to continue watching with the next episode automatically.
Especially if you played not the first episode of a show as a test, this can be confusing for the uninitiated.

There is also a difference whether you are at the preplay page of

  • the whole show
  • a season of the show
  • a single episode of a show

Two points of clarification:

This is at the preplay page of the whole show.
The place I’ve noticed this is on the AppleTV app (4th gen).

I do believe you have something there with the whole marked as watched thing though. I will play with this tonight when I get home.

Thanks,
Tom

I don’t have such a device myself, but the behaviour should be consistent across different Plex Clients.

Yes, if you toggle this twice, you can reset a show to an ‘untouched’ state.
