I use Plex to store a complete online library of my personal music collection. My own folders are meticulously organised with tagging data edited via the MP3Tag application. Plex has been pretty good at maintaining the artist-based album folder naming, but it is not quite perfect.
I have albums by “Robert Plant” and also “Robert Plant & Alison Krauss”. For the latter, both the Album Artist and Track Artist fields for each track are set to “Robert Plant & Alison Krauss”, but when these albums are uploaded to the Plex Server, they both still get stored under the artist folder “Robert Plant”.
Why does this happen, and how can I correct it in the Plex folders?
Did you configure your library to use/prefer embedded metadata?
If your library is using the Plex Music agent, see ⋮ > Manage Library > Edit... → Advanced > Prefer embedded metadata for that particular library. If you’re using a legacy agent, you might need to check that Local Media Assets is enabled for that agent under Settings > [Server Name] > Agents.
Thanks for the quick response. I followed your instructions as closely as I could, selecting “Settings” from the left sidebar of the Plex web page, then “Agents”, which gave me options for Movies, Shows, Artists, Albums & Photos.
I selected “Artists” and found that “Personal Media Artists” is unticked, and “Local Media Assets (Artists)” is already ticked, which I think is what you are saying should be the case. If I click on the Settings cogwheel, for that choice it offers me the opportunity to select a “Local music video path”, which I have ignored as it doesn’t look helpful for me.
I repeated the exercise for the “Albums” option and the settings there are the same (i.e. “Personal Media Albums” is unticked and “Local Media Assets (Album)” is ticked).
In both cases, a tag just above (“Personal Media Artists”) is set to Last.fm. I presume I could change this but I have left it untouched as it’s not going to help my case.
One thing I have done is to drag the two “Local Media Assets (…)” options to sit above the “Personal Media …” options as it implies that they would then be treated as more important. Not sure if that will help though.
And now that I have the two joint artists albums sitting in the wrong folder, is there any way in which I can manually create a new appropriately named folder and move them into that?
The changes you made should still require a metadata refresh of the music library.
Keep in mind those changes will only work if your library is still configured to use a legacy music agent. If your library’s agent is Plex Music, you’ll need to check Prefer local metadata – you might also want to set the Genre and Album art options to use local/embedded data/art. In case you’re using the Plex Music agent, those options are only available in the Advanced tab when editing that particular library!
