I’m not quite sure where the incorrect date is coming from (I don’t have an account at TheMovieDB to check the info/history). I do find it strange that the date is correct at TheMovieDB, TVDB and IMDB at least has the correct year but Plex is grabbing the wrong info.
So I can understand how IMDb is not giving out a “correct” theatrical date since one doesn’t exist. However, IMDb does have 2 dates for this and the earliest date would make more sense to take then the later date.
See the screenshot where I have highlighted both US dates, the DVD premiere and the Blu-ray.
I’m not sure what information Plex is pulling into their combined metadata DB, but it seems like taking the earliest release date for the country selected for the “Country (used for release date and content rating)” setting would make more sense than taking the last entry.
Looking into this movie, it only had a direct-to-video release, so seems like something that should be taken into consideration for movies that don’t have theatrical releases.
And yes, I know I can (and I will do it now that I know the reason) update the date manually, it just seems like a poor decision on which date to take in this situation to me. I understand data is never going to be 100% perfect, but the metadata team could have chosen better logic (like comparing the date to what TheMovieDB has since that is the other source they use).
I realize you can’t do anything about this, other than possibly passing the critique/concern/whatever onto the team, so I’ll mark your response as the solution. Just wanted to give my $0.02 (probably more like $0.10 at this point) on this.
