Plex Movie Database scraper pulling the wrong release date

Server Version#: 1.20.3.3483

The Plex TMDB scraper is pulling the wrong dates for movies, it appears to be collecting the latest release date for a movie which on TMDB is a date for a physical release.

Examples are The Goonies being scraped as a 2020 movie, Beetlejuice is scraped as 2018 movie and Mannequin is scraped as a 2003 movie. These are dates when the DVD and BluRays were released.

This could be a quite a significant issue going forward as more older films, and newer films, get physical release dates. Can the Plex scraper please be fixed so that it only scrapes the first Theatrical release date?

I just tested and these are matching correctly for me.

That’s the same info I have. Can you post the xml output from PMS.

The XML for the movie’s entry in Plex Server?

Investigate Media Information and Formats | Plex Support

This site doesn’t allow me to share XML files, do you want me to copy and paste the content directly?

Save it to a text file and post the file.

Thanks. I was able to confirm that the agent does appear to be pulling newer release dates. I couldn’t reproduce with those movies since there was only ever 1 release in the US, but I was able to reproduce with another movie. I’ll update here when I hear back if this is a bug or intentional.

Yeah I may have overstated the the impact when I said it could become “quite a significant” issue, for me I tend to look for a film I want to watch at the moment or just go through the list then pick what I fancy. I suppose there may be some people who will want to sort by release date to see their 70’s films etc.

Ok, got word from the devs that it’s a limitation of TheMovieDB’s API. When Plex requests the metadata, their API only returns 1 release date. It may not necessarily be the original release date. Plex has no control over that, sorry.

Fair enough, seems there is a fellow Brit who thinks he is doing a good deed but messing up our Plex libraries in Britain lol. I’ll just manually edit the ones I notice.

Hi, I asked the guys over in TMDB and they say the issue down to how to API is being used:

I think they are saying it is upto Plex to fix the API Request.

I don’t know the details, but I’ve passed the info along.
