Indirect access help

I’m getting an indirect access message when I connect to plex on my home network. This causes very bad picture quality. I’ve looked into ‘relay’ but I’m not sure how/why it would apply here. The remote access in settings will show green, but then change to red after awhile. My router has Upnp enabled. I’ve been using the server on my desktop for a few years without issue. And it happens with multiple devices on the home network: roku, android, firestick etc. Firewall exception is enabled. Not exactly sure if port forwarding is needed here. Any ideas how this started and what I can do to fix?

Please read through Remote Access and Troubleshooting Remote Access support pages.
Then step through this guide: The Basics of Remote Access Troubleshooting

If you have been unable to get remote access working after you have completed all of the above (please be thorough and don’t skip any steps, or think you’ve already done all of this so you don’t need to bother), come back and we’ll get some details from you and proceed from there.

The remote access going green initially is a red herring. It will always go green after you make a change, while Plex is actually checking the access. Once the check is complete it correctly changes to red. It is not actually briefly working and then stopping.

I redid the manual port forwarding and now remote access is staying green. I can now connect on my home network with good quality. I still get terrible quality when connecting outside of my network, however, I won’t ever be using plex outside of the network.

Your server inside the network should not need remote access enabled for it to work properly

When you play something inside the network look in your sever dashboard

What does yours say there?

If it says remote you should look here

I checked 2 devices within my network, both are playing properly and neither says remote. Seems the manual port forwarding has fixed the issue within the home network. When I take my android off of home wifi and use mobile network, the quality is very bad

Check the Ethernet port settings on your Plex Media Server.

Make sure it is configured as a Private, not Public, network.

Windows 10: Settings → Network & Internet.

Properties if you need to change the setting.

It was on public, changed to private. Everything seems to be working normal except still very bad quality when remote connected.

Public isolates your PC from the remainder of the network. Great when you’re in a coffee shop. Not so much when you want to stream to devices on your own network.

Refer to @JaysPlex’s post.

Do the remote streams show as Remote or Indirect.

If Remote, which is desired, check bandwidth settings on the server (Settings → Remote Access) and on the client (Settings → Quality). The default client setting for remote streaming is 2 Mbps.

If Indirect, you’ve remote access issues. See documents linked by @perplexity .
