I installed plex media server and plex application on two PC’s. When I tell PC B ,which is the second install, to record a program it appears to tell PC A to record the program. I’m trying to set up two system that both will record the same programs as backup.
Why is this happening.
Are both servers programmed to record the program? If so, they might be competing for the tuner. There might also be some competition between the two if both are programmed to dump the recording into the same folder structure.
I would think if you want these two servers to function independently, you’ll want individual tuners for each, and separated folder structures. Guaranteed way to separate church and state.
Both PC’s have their own quad tuners. I have a folder called Recordings on both PC’s. As far as I know they should record to their own folder.
I also noticed that when I opened Plex on PC B the T guide was blank until I powered up PC A.
I don’t think this is possible. All pms have access to all tuners. The only way around this is to use different accounts to separate the servers.

I don’t think that is entirely accurate.
If you have 2 servers, P1 and P2, and 2 quad tuners, T1 and T2, P1 can be configured to use T1 only and P2 to use T2 only. What is accurate is that PMS assumes sole access and control to the tuners configured on this server. In this case, P2 shouldn’t conflict with P1/T1.
@ronclifford66 did you “clone” your first PMS server into the second? What you’re describing is not what I’ve experienced here when I was tinkering with multiple servers.
I can’t find how to configure the server to only use tuners on the system it is using. I did find that if I turned off webhook and used the guide for the PC I was on would setup the recording on the PC I was using. But if I used the favorites to record it would schedule that program on the other PC.
I didn’t clone the PMS setup. I install Plex on PC A and a few months later install PMS on PC B.
I also just found out the I probably should not be using the plex app to configure PMS on PC A and B.
I have a third system with PMS installed. It has no tuners it is just used to stream what has been recorded.
Under Settings/LiveTV & DVR, you should see a list of tuners that this particular PMS instance is configured to use. Look immediately below Channel Sources, to the left of the My Channels list. There’s an Add Another Device option. What I don’t see is an option to delete a particular device, only the entire DVR configuration. If you have the same tuner configured in both servers, I’d suggest deleting the DVR configuration, and recreating it, making sure that you have given a tuner to only 1 PMS server. I’d also suggest deleting the DVR configuration, waiting 2 minutes, then restarting the PMS instance before recreating the DVRs.
I’m super curious what your use case is for running three different servers?
I record shows with two tuners on one PMS which handles all the playback of recordings and non recordings. I obviously don’t know your specific needs, but on the surface it seems a little overly complicated.
I generally only stream video during the time that I’m recording. So that I don’t have to use the recording system to stream I use the third system. I also use the second system as a backup for the first system. If everything works, I won’t use the recordings from the second system.
I also have setup the systems to go to sleep after 23:00 if plex is not recording any programs. Before it goes to sleep it checks to see when plex is scheduled to record the next program and issues a scheduled wakeup for 5 minutes before plex needs to start recording. This has been working for the last few months.
As far as I know I don’t have the tuners configured on both PMS. I have two quad tuners on each PC. PMS on each PC shows only two tuners. I think by turning off webhook I can now setup each system to record what I want. Just need to use the guide for each PMS not the favorites guide.
I think you may be overcomplicating things a bit. I store my media files on a NAS, with a dedicated server for PMS. There are supporting subsystems on the PMS server, including an IPTV tuner (5 tuners in a single device,) Tautulli, etc. I’ve been running this for 7 years now without any issues. I set PMS to record as much of the last Olympics as I could, 5 simultaneous recording streams, for 2 weeks, along with being able to stream other media as well. No issues.
I don’t have any needs to perform duplicate or backup recordings. The few failures I’ve had really would have affected all tuners in use, IOW, the tuners have been rock solid. Obviously, if you don’t have confidence in your tuners, YMMV.
I’ve been running dual windows PC’s with BeyondTV as the DVR program since 2009. During that time, I have had a few occasions to use the backup recordings. It is not the tuners that cause the loss of video. I’d continue to use BeyondTV but the program has not been updated in over ten years. Also, windows 10 is going no support next month. I really don’t want to continue with windows but I have a couple of programs that I can’t find a Linux version that will replace them.
I don’t know what else to suggest. To the best of my knowledge, 2 PMS instances do not communicate directly with each other. Does BeyondTV emulate an HDHomeRun tuner, or do you have a proxy service between your PMS instances and BeyondTV tuners? But even that shouldn’t trigger a recording in the other PMS instance.
I guess in the interests of public eye troubleshooting…. post up a screen grab of Settings/LiveTV&DVR showing the configured tuners on your A & B PMS instances. And grab the debug logs from both instances when the cross-instance problem occurs.
I’m not sure what is going on. But when I go to the localhost/web on PC B. I then try to record a program from the favorite guide it schedules the program on PC A. If I want to record on PC B I need to click on the guide for PC B. It will then schedule the program on PC B. If PC A is powered off and I try to record a program using the favorite guide a windows opens but nothing will display.
Now that I understand this, I can record the programs as I wish.
BeyondTV does not emulate a HDHomeRun tuner. It basically is similiar to plex in that it has a guide that you use to record programs. It does not stream any thing. I don’t use BeyondTV to interact with Plex.
PC A has two quad HD tuners. PC B has one quad HD tuner. These are Haupauge tuners
Is there any possibility that you’re trying to share the metadata database between your PMS servers?
Since I don’t know what you are talking about. I can say No.
