I use Plex on Apple TV for Lossless audio to HomePod. I like this because it allows me to control the HomePod from any device, website and even Alexa.
This approach works amazing. I thought the HomePod sounded great with its ability to compensate for compression related artifacts. It sounds INCREDIBLE with pure lossless content.
Here are where the problems come in. If the Apple TV goes to the screensaver, and I remote control the client with Plex client from the web or another device, it either causes the incorrect content to queue or it’ll freeze the client.
The other thing that happens is I like to quickly switch audio sources by swiping down like you can while playing movies. While playing audio, you aren’t able to do this. I like to change to the HomePod and be able to quickly adjust the dynamic range audio settings without having to go deep into settings or play a movie and then swipe down.
