Hello, I am contacting the forum to talk about a problem that annoys me a lot with the Plex application on Apple TV pairing with a HomePod. Let me explain :
When I use my Plex app on my Apple TV coupled to the HomePod everything works the first time, then I put the tv app on standby. when I turn it back on, the HomePod is always connected to the apple tv, I launch Youtube, music, Arte, Netflix … the sound comes out well on the HomePod, when I open Plex to read a movie, there the sound comes out on the TV and not on the HomePod, while in the settings of the apple tv the audio output is properly set on the HomePod. The problem seems to come from the Plex app. Do you have this problem? Have you found a solution? and are the Plex teams aware of this problem? Thank you for your help, it is very painful.
I just noticed that this problem disappears when I deactivate the improved video player. A possible update to solve this problem with airplay devices? Because I took the Plex pass express for this player which is much more fluid on the apple tv. Thank you.
I got my Apple TV and set up Plex on it back in November. I had been experiencing this issue this entire time and thought it was just an Apple TV bug. I just recently figured out that the issue with the sound coming out of the TV even though the Apple TV is connected to the HomePod is only happening with the Plex app after waking up from standby. If I go to any other app, the sound plays normally and through the HomePod.
To resolve this issue, I always have to disconnect from the HomePod and reconnect to it every time I wake the Apple TV in order to get Plex to play through the HomePod. I am also using the enhanced video player. I suspect this issue can be happening with any AirPlay speaker, not just the HomePod, but I do not have any other AirPlay speaker to test this with.
I too have this issue, I’ve complained to Plex support a couple years ago but they haven’t released a fix yet, not sure if I should get the plex pass renewed until it’s fixed
I have a different problem with homepod.
While playing movies through homepod, the homepod need some time to buffer. That is:
After hitting play, it takes a few seconds for homepod to have sound.
After hitting pause, it also takes a few seconds for homepod to stop sound.
I think it’s a API/SDK issue?
I have the same issue. HomePods work perfectly through the old player, but will not play through the new. Before a recent server update, the trick ericyun mentioned worked for me, but that is no longer true.
This is a deal-breaker for me, as my AppleTV 4K is using a pair of HomePods for audio. Every app works great except Plex on the new player (thanks for that temporary workaround).
Hoping the new player can be corrected for this setup in the future, hopefully before they fully remove the legacy player.
I’m not sure if you were aware, but Apple TV now supports connecting to HomePods directly. They can be used as the primary audio output for all sounds now. That includes games, UI sounds, and yes, Plex.
Unfortunately, this mode does incur a noticeable latency penalty, so Plex should still support streaming to HomePods directly, but it’s better than nothing.
i just got a homepod mini and am using it with appletv 4k. plex is the only app with sync issues. bell fibe, iTunes, appletv+, disney+, youtube, netflix all work great. hope this gets fixed.
