Interlaced content now transcoding on Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K?

thanks @sa2000

Just created a specific issue with details:

Andrea

A further release is out 7.29.1 which addresses a second issue that arose at the same time

  • Player: ensure recommended H264 profile is set to what the device supports

What is the latest on this issue where live TV streams of interlaced content to Fire Stick TV 4k are being forced to transcode instead of Direct Play? I installed 7.31.0.16542-beta and it still has this bug. Please, please fix!
James

The current position is that we have a temporary fix for an Amazon Fire 4K TV issue and this fix whilst has benefited many users, for some users it is causing a problem. The Amazon Fire 4K TV underlying issue is covered by this FTV Stick 4K interlaced video playback leads to media player crash · Issue #94 · amzn/exoplayer-amazon-port · GitHub

I will try and find out more

Thank you. So is this still in the queue to be fixed in an upcoming release? Please let me know… Sports on live TV is now almost unbearable to watch.
James

I’m using plex server 18.4.2171.xxx in debian and plex 7.27.1.xxx in firestick 4k with not problems, don’t transcode live tv at all.
Now, if i update Plex server, bad.
If i update Plex player in firestick, bad.
It’s start making transcoding on all channels or crash player.

@sa2000 were you able to determine any info or a way forward on this issue? Hopefully, a fix is in the works?? Or am I stuck using 7.27.1.xxx in perpetuity?

For the Amazon Fire 4K TV issue that we were trying to circumvent by transcoding, we are working on a preference/setting that allows you to disable this change - the fix helped some users but caused problems for others. So until we have a fix from Amazon for the underlying issue, we have transcoding and this will soon be optional with the new setting that we are working on

That is a perfectly good solution as far as I’m concerned. I’m sure the answer is probably just “soon”, but any idea on a timeframe for rolling this out? A couple days, a week, a month?

Thanks.

I do not know how long it takes but I am hoping it would be weeks rather than a month to have a beta available

That sounds good… A user selectable option to turn off transcoding would be a great addition. Glad to hear there is some hope of a workable solution in the near future.

Glad I found this thread. I was VERY disappointed when this came out. Watching interlaced sources on live TV @ 30 FPS is terrible.

Will continue to check in on this thread regarding an update.

I’d like to chime in and say that I have been experiencing the same issues as everyone else here with the latest verisons of Plex for Android 7.31.0 on my FireTV Stick 4K. All live TV transcodes no mater what.

Rolling back to 7.27.1.15203 allows Live TV to direct play and solves the problem for now. Looking forward to an an update that resolves this!

Is there an official bug for this being tracked by the plex team?

We have just released Plex for Android 8.0.0.which introduces an app setting to disable transcoding on Amazon Fire for interlaced video

See release note:

  • [TV] Live TV: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k users can now disable transcode of interlaced streams.

The transcoding was introduced to circumvent the Amazon Fire 4k TV issue covered by this: FTV Stick 4K interlaced video playback leads to media player crash · Issue #94 · amzn/exoplayer-amazon-port · GitHub

Unfortunately whilst the transcoding fixed the problem for some users, other users especially ones with HD Homerun that does its own transcoding had issues with this change. So now we have a user setting to disable this transcoding if it is causing a problem

The transcoding and the related setting is temporary until the underlying issue is fixed by Amazon

Thank you! Working for me. This is a good compromise until Amazon gets their patch out.

Yep, i got the update today and this is working well for me. Thanks.

Working well for me! Thanks!

Nice job development team! Fire stick 4K is working great now! Do you think this option can be rolled out on the Mi box s to fix the 9.0 live tv videoplayback codec problem?
