Interlaced videos won't play on Plex Web - Chromium Browsers

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2902
Player Version#: 4.35.1

When attempting to play 1080i videos on Plex Web, such videos are stuck loading and never play when on Chromium browsers (tested on Chrome and Vivaldi). The only way to remedy this is to convert to a lower bitrate or select “Convert Automatically” in order to force a transcode. In Firefox, the videos are playable without issue or transcoding needed.

On Chromium browsers, interlaced videos should be instructed to be transcoded rather than original since it does not appear to be compatible.

You have the transcoder disabled?
(it’s an educated guess)

If you insist on using a player in a browser (Plexweb) - expect failures often.

If you use a real Player App - that doesn’t run in your browser - that’s what you really want.

There are two Dedicated and Powerful Player Apps - down the page at the Apps/Devices link - Plex for Whatever - and Plex Media Player.

Plex for Whatever is most like Plexweb.
Plex Media Player is meant more for HTPC applications, but it does have some ballsy enhanced settings - available in TV View.

Pick one or both and use as necessary.

Transcoding is on. I transcode stuff like ASS/PGS subs all the time.

I’m well aware of the available clients and frequently use them. I’m trying to make others aware so that this issue might be fixed.

I just don’t think it’s responsible to sweep issues under the rug and say “ignore it and use a different client”, but I digress.

If a client is unable to play a particular video whether it be container, audio, or video, Plex is supposed to convert it on its own. Unfortunately, plex is failing to do so in this case.

Suit yourself.

You’ll want to prepare some DeBug Logs (NOT Verbose) capturing the event - or non-event as it were.
You’ll also want to prepare a MediaInfo report showing all the streams and tracks within. <—of the same file you got a fail on and captured in the logs.
